Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Nathan you've sleeved your block if you dont mind me asking what percentage are you losing through your piston rings or how good is your piston to sleeve compression loss compared to standard

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Its was just as good.
The sleeves were fitted then bored then torque plate honed so compression was as good as any std block.

But the block cracked so at the minute i am running a thick walled block
- we shall see how that lasts.

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
sorry for the questions nathan but what i'm asking that engines come from factory with some compression loss through the rings for example 10% did you for example try and get that down to say between 5-7% reason for asking all these questions is that im doing research for a engine build! just wanted to see if you guys were or had done any research down this route!!!!!!!!!
also sorry for hijacking the thread abit

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Tbh mate, so long as the bores are precisley machined to the correct specifications of that of the pistons, and the piston rings are of the correct gap and material suited to its use, then i cant see you improving compression losses at all unless you start spending
£££££'s on higher precision parts, materials and testing.

after all, the piston will need space to expand, and depending on its silicone content, it will expand more or it will expand less.
but to know the exact amount to which it will expand, you would need to remove the variables that alter the charaistics of the burn cycle and hence keep every cycle the same.
.
.
but as im sure you know, this is impossible.
.
an increase of 0.5c in air temp is enough to make it a variable and increase the burn temp.
.
.
which will in effect cause the piston to expand so many microns more.
.
therefore, you could never really know the perfect diameter bore/piston/ring etc to get perfect compression.
.but they are made to tollerences that are sutible/good enough for there use.

so
, considering that, i dont think you should worry too much about compression losses.
.
.
like i said before, make sure everyting is measured to the correct spec, honed properly and run in properly.
.
that will get you the best results.

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Been very busy last few weeks so really havent made much progress
- managed to get 2 days on it where i did lots of weight loss
+ new wiring then fitted the NOS.
.

Some pics.
.
.

Checking valve clearances again
+ trial fitting bottle

I was planning on running the bottle in the frunk but it didnt sit right, couldnt run it in the boot due to the BMIC so it seemed to fit there a treat.
.
.
i was in 2 minds weather to run the bottle upside down or not
- eventually, i decided to run it the right way up and fit a purge system to it.

Some weight loss bits

The lovely new 50mm tial BOV.
.

I then had a play with fitting the maximiser
+ arming switches
- started with this idea.
.

then this.
.

but ended up with this.
.

Obviously i lost the heater control location with this setup which wasnt ideal but it was the only way i was happy with the look.
Seeing as i wont be running with a glovebox due to the roll cage going in i just extended the heater control wires and re located it
- if you look closely, you will see it

I then decided i dont like red bottles.
.
.
.

so i sprayed it black.
.
.

in position with the obligitory sticker.
.

Once all that was done, i drilled
+ tapped the manifold for the nitrous jets.
.

With the positioning of the jets in the reccomended place the feed tubes were kinked slightly so after a few tweeks i had a nice cutout in my firewall which gave the feed tubes room and allowed me to plumb in the nitrous in the boot
- winner all round.
.
.

More wiring to finish off then its just a case of fabricating the new exhaust and finishing off the direct ign setup
- then off to mapping!

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Thats the same nos setup as i am running on my car just with out the direct port
,going to do that in the next few weeks
,and it does work well as i have a rev2 engine with a rev3, turbo ecu etc and i did a 12.158
@119.03 when i fitted it a mate who used to sell and fit nos told me not to put the bottle where you have put yours,as the way it sits you do not get the same pressure as it not flat and use a bottle warmer as it keeps the same pressure
,and i run 150 bhp jets in my car and i did 14 runs and did not mis a beat.Paul

Interesting you say that about bottle location.

Thats good results with your setup

Interesting you say that about bottle location.
I was informed that the ideal location was near enough upright.
.
.
.
im in talks with Trevor Langfield so im sure he'll be advising me anyhow.

Thats good results with your setup
- are you using the maximiser?

Hi i was using the maximiser and its a very good bit of kit
,my mate used to use trevor as he was a dealer for him
,do not know why he tolded me not to use it like that, as i let him fit and set it up for me
.could have done better times but xxxx tyres and no 3rd gear so in the new year i got my self a trd slip and the st165 gear parts for the box
.what tyres do you use.Paul

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
I sell the ST165 final drive, check my sub forum in affiliates if your interested.

Im using Mickey Thompson Drag radials
- the launches are far from perfect.
.
this is one area i need to work on to get the 60fts down.
Im aiming to use the nitrous to enable me to lower the launch RPM and use the torque more reducing wheelspin.

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
I just got hold of a gear box out of a st165 and thanks for the ofter
,you will lose most of your turbo lag with it and where did you get your tyres from as i am hoping to get in the 11s next year
,and then i will be going for a bigger turbo
,getting the running gear all done 1st.

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Well lots and lots have been happening on my MR2 over the past few months.
.
.
i'm finally seeing the end of the tunel and the light is looking damn bright!

First things first.
.

Since the times the car has been running, the car has gained masses of interest and along the way i've picked up a couple of sponsors

Owens Developments
- they are doing voodoo stuff to my turbo right now.
.
i really quite excited to see what this produces on the dyno.
.
These guys are turbo god's
- what they dont know, isnt worth knowing!!

Opie oils
- they are supplying the car with oils and we all know these guys know they know their oil stuff and im proud to be associated with this organisation.

Wizards of Nos
- Trevor Langfield has been fantastic in his advice and has re-designed my a NOS kit using CAD and has supplied me with discounted parts on the basis that i get the performance we're all hoping for.
.
.
again, this guy hasn't got the name
'wizard of NOS' for nothing
- the best in the business bar none.

Also, my on going sponsor of marangoni is still onboard and they keep me rubbered up and want the car next to the 3s powered yaris at the shows with me being their yaris test pilot up the strip

I got a coupe of others on the boil but nothing firmed up as yet.
.
.
.

It makes me happy that people are willing to put their time and product into my car in the return for using it as a platform to promote them
- they realise the potential of the car and i truely believe that because its an MR2, its something different
- they are a fairly under rated car in the drag arena and myself and a few others are trying to make a change
- lets hope this season gives my sponsors the return they desire and their products give me the performance to put the wind up the big boys!

Right
- free plug over.
.
.
back to business
-

As in one of the above posts, i deemed my manifold to be a bad design with the wastegate in the position it was in
- hampering my exhaust flow due to the bend of the downpipe so i got it altered

before.
.

after.
.

With the waste gate out the way i will now route the screamer pipe in a wicked place
(will post pics once finished.
.
) and i've got a 4" bore exhaust system im currently fabbing up coming straight out of the side vent
- zero back pressure
= more power

Next up was my intercooler piping.
.
.
far from satisfied with the silicone bend before the throttle body i decided to take a template and get a metal bend made up by my fab man.
.
the result was this.
.

Notice the new BOV is as close to the throttle body as possible
- this will help turbo keep spinning better and cause minimal pressure build up in the pipes.
Another reason for changing BOV's was that my turbosmart one only had a 20mm inlet so wasnt working as efficient as possible
- the new tial one has a 50mm inlet with a far bigger outlet too so should be more than man enough for the job.

Due to me going direct igntion my cam cover needed modification so i could bolt the coils down
- after some work and a well needed paint change i ended up with this.
.

On motor.
.

I used powder coat over paint
- much more durable.

Again with the direct ign coupled with the link Xlem i got a cam sensor made which will enable me to run sequential spark and injection
- not really essential for my engine as paired is more than ample but from a technical point of view i want the car to be the best it can possibly be and to show just what i can do to these motors

Next up is some serious weight saving.
.
.

30kgs on these bad boys.
.

I then removed all the carpet and decided to tackle the sound deadening
-
**** for anyone thinking of doing this.
.
.
.
dont!!**** Its a pain in the ass! After about 2hours of hard graft it was all off.
.
.

the wonders of matt black paint.
.

Finally, the roll cage all powder coated and ready to be fitted.
.

I've got a few more bits that are away at the min but ill post them up once all back.

The nitrous kit is going to look fantasitc once all done too!

Thanks for looking

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Cheers guys
- im trying to make everything as rock solid as posssible.
.

I forgot to add that i've now nylon mounted the motor with the torque bar back on and extra braces with another torque bar across the top of the motor.

Next on the list is the CRW driveshafts
- i'll be bringing a few sets over so if any of you guys are interested please let me know.

Regards,

Nathan

Re: My MR2 - the dark destroyer
Looks awesome Nathan.

Did you weigh the sound deadening?
I found nearly 4kg of the stuff per side in even the MK1!
It is a b1tch of a job but should be a really good and cheap way to get weight off!

PM me a price on the driveshafts.

Hi Nathan,

I also have some some guys interested in the CRW driveshafts as an interim solution until we have time to come up with something better.
