A spam idea....

It's been posted in the General section, and I've both noticed and reported an increasing number of spam posts recently...

What about, when you report a post (for spam only, I hasten to add) it's immediately whisked away to mod world? After all, how many posts are reported for spam, when they're anything BUT spam?

This will then (obviously lol) immediately remove the spam in case of accidental clickage, and elimate multiple reports?

'Tis a good idea Keith, but unfortunately very open to abuse by unscrupulous people who may come along and hit the 'report button' to remove the posts of people he/she may have a grudge against or just for shits and giggles.

Hmmmm with hindsight, yeah I can see the problems with mis-use, more work for moderators etc...

What about warnings for repeat offenders etc? I.E. after a mod has viewed the topic, if it is wrongly (and obviously was never spam etc) alerted, the offender is warned not to do it again.

I can see this "simple" idea already getting very complicated

How about only moving it automatically when the users post count is (say) less than 10? Or even 1? Given most spammers are new accounts, it would prevent the malicious problems Limey is concerned about.

count post of 1 seems to be the spammers limit.

How about upgrading the Rules of joining to make an obligatory post in the new users section introducing themselves and making them state they have read rules etc, before validating them to post in the rest of the forum. This works well on 205gti drivers. Will also keep a few trouble makers at bay with the lengthier sign up process, although will mean some new users may have to wait a few days for validation.

forcing one post in the introductions forum would limit spam to one forum though significantly reducing need to look for it and report it. Just an idea.

The only problem with that, Tbar, is that it makes more work for the mods. Something which I don't think is fair.

jont's suggestion gets around that, while still (hopefully) making the spam posts dissapear quicker......

Erm good idea, luckily our firewall works quite well.Bloody reported the porn one in off topic as spam, then tyring to close the window hit the link...

I like this idea Slarty. But I think its a lot of work for the admin.

If a post has any number of key words ie PORN, etc then it goes to a holding area to be approved ny mods before being published ont he open forum.

I feel this may be a lot of coding etc for the people that be, but great idea

I've alway been an advocate of manual registration, if all the mods/admin peeps had to approve an individual before they could post I think the spammers would soon get the idea that they can't get onto IMOC.
