The bush/washers get worn away causing difficult gear selection.

This is your first port of call as it is an uber cheapo fix.
Hopefully replacing this washer will solve the prob

Easy solution, crack master cylinder push rod nut, screw the rod out from the pedal 1-2 turns then lock the nit back up..
