[Mk2] [Turbo] doesn't like 1st gear

only had my rev3 tubby for a couple of months and all has been fine so far. it's got a racing clutch but all gears used to select fine. now she doesn't like going into 1st. also the clutch has to be all the way to the floor. HELP. Don't think the clutch is worn out as no slip?

I have the same thing with first, very difficult to select unless stationary, I've been advised that I need to change the gear change bushes, up near gearbox end..

I sometimes find it difficult to get into first unless going very slowly. Worse when cold.

are you sure you don't have a leak in the clutch pedal fluid or even just old fluid that's not creating the required amount of pressure

not sure at all. how would i go about bleading the clutch fluid. is it the same as doing brakes?

I have to use both hands and force it up for about 10-15 seconds to try and find first gear!! I just pull away in second for now.

It is down to the gear linkage joints in the engine bay end. The bush/washers get worn away causing difficult gear selection. This is your first port of call as it is an uber cheapo fix.

Hopefully replacing this washer will solve the prob

I changed mine for the bearing type and changed the box oil for millers CRX 80/90 this made it alot better.

There is also a small square piece of metal thats part of the selector on the box this also gets worn so I replaced this

I've (well Rogue, after I'd bought the part) tried the twosrus parts twice now... cant get one side on and select first for love nor money so the original has stayed on (its still in good nick though), other side went on fine and was an improvement but the original that side was highly perished.
How much is the new o.e.m. part?

PS. Redline worked for me too. Definate improvement but again original fluid was prob. v old.

Looking at the two's r us website they say toyota only sell them with the cables and you dont want to know how much those are!!!

gonna try bleeding the clutch. Where is the header tank for it and the bleed nipple? I take it you bleed them in the same way as brakes?

FWIW, 1st can be difficult when gearbox oil is cold on many cars. Changing the bushes on the selector cables won't help fix this, but will improve the feel shifting gears.

Given the Driveshaft oil seals are known to leak in MK2 Turbos I'd check first the oil level in the gearbox - if you're nearly dry this will cause gears to be difficult to engage.

For gearbox oil - I'd use Redline MT90, but have recently put Comma 80w90 in the Mk1 and have been quite impressed by that - it did smooth out the shifts.

gear changes are fri88ing sweet...

and still is tough ish to get inot first when at 5-10pmh....
i just wait until im virtually at a spot, or od as crooky does and just leave it in second and pull off in that gear.

seem to of fixed the problem with help from skywalker. theres a threaded rod on the back of the clutch that goes though the bulkhead. undid the nuts, screwed it though a bit, did nuts back up. now all is good.

Was about to suggest this, its a common problem with MR2's. The biting point is on the floor and the clutch just isnt dis engaging 100% making the gears feel stiff when stationary.

Easy solution, crack master cylinder push rod nut, screw the rod out from the pedal 1-2 turns then lock the nit back up... hey presto, every gear is easy to select
