[Mk2] [Turbo] Maybe Selling for Winter

Post by Ed209 »

Hi All,

Thinking of selling my MR2 Tubby Rev2 for the winter..i will be buying a better condition REV3 Tubby next summer..so just wondering about a FTO - the 2ltre Mivec V6 GPX..love the looks but do you think the power loss will be massive?

Anyone had a MR2 Tubby and a FTO who can give me some info?

Thanks
Ed

FTO from my experience are good handling wise, the power is ok but nothing special. Also try going for the manual (rarer) but much better than the tiptronic.
Alot better in the streets than a rwd handling wise, best thing to do is go test drive one and see for yourself.

Hi ed,

I used to own both, had a '93 MR2 Turbo GTS and then a '94 FTO GPX Mivec. Both lovely cars but different animals entirely.

I had the Tiptronic gearbox in the FTO, very nice and smooth but only 4 speed. The power delivery was excellent really shifts beyond 6K revs round to 8.5K revs. But it's not in the same way as the tubby, tubby kicks in and powers from about 3 to 7. The FTO kicks twice once at about 3k and again at 6.5k, good performance 0-60 of about 6.6-7 secs.

The FTO is a beautiful car to drive, the sound from the V6 is fantastic. Handles extremely well for a front drive car. Very reliable, I never had any probs owned it for 2 years. Only had to change the battery. Fuel consumption is better than the tubby I got 29 mpg mixed.

Any specific questions? I'll do my best to answer.

I just sold my fto to get something turbo'd. I had the manual GR which is the model below the gpx but still a v6. I had it nearly a year and nothing went wrong with it. Great car, looks and handling very good. Performance wise it was quick enough. 0 - 60 in around 7secs. If u get one make sure its got a lot of history. Due to the nature of the engine it can get driven hard. Stay away from the GS model. Its a 1.8litre 4 pot and if u ask me defeats the object of having an fto - no v6 roar!

as already said, the tubby does feel quicker due to alot more low down torque which kicks you into the back of your seat...the fto is more of a smooth power delivery. So in terms of power then it is behind the tubby but feels quicker than the na.

if you do decide to get one, dont discount the GR either fella. TBH theres very little difference in terms of driving them and the GR is arguably the much more reliable of the two engines..

Handling wise, I've driven ITRs and theres not a whole lot of difference between that and the FTO..

Anyway the main thing is they look the dogs b0llox, heres a pic of mine

Cheers for your info chaps...Slyme - did you have one of these mivec controllers so you can set the valves to open lower down the rev range?
Thanks Ed

Those mivec controllers are a waste of money! Have a look at ftooc.org(i think). Loads of info there.

I have had 2 fto's in black (best colour imho). First one was a auto and gearbox went on it. Second one was a manual and lovely to drive, 10 times better than autos.

One of the best looking jap import imho, but such a shame mitsi didn't do a turbo version.

No as bigR says, waste of money apparently. I don't think you'd need it. Its great for cruising, but if you floor it it won't disappoint, can embarass a lot of cars, 200BHP isn't bad and as said very similar to an ITR.

I had the tiptronic great for cruising around, if you want to blat it and don't like the gearbox telling you when to change flip it to the side and its semi-automatic no jerking, and an intelligent gearbox too. Apparently constantly adjusting to your driving style. giving you more revs on occasions and running on 3 cylinders when just poodling along. Very nice car, would even say the prettiest. I had a bordeaux red, nice colour too.

Out of the cars I've owned the Tubby and the FTO are leagues ahead of the rest in terms of style, power and performance.
