Touche!

...or because they appealed more to the performance car buying public?

Oh cripes... :P

Or should that be because they appealed more to the straightline junkies?

;)

pats 4 stars for the MK1 in Evo and 2 for the MK2..

Huh? The age-old IMOC-UK "Turbo Vs N/A" debate has raged for eons, and is usually made up by people giving their opinion on the cars without them owning/driving both, so there's no difference on this thread.

Interesting to see how this thread has changed, though. :)
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Here, here at last a MK2 owner who talks sense!! ;)

Seriously though i think we are all aware what a good day to day car a MK2 is with all its creature comforts and mile munching ability, but i think you have something when you say how a MK1 feels a bit special because it is a retro car and has that X factor in how it feels.

I honestly think that only those that have had both Marks can really comment from an objective viewpoint, we've heard Spammon how about Ben? as he currently owns a turbo and an early MK1.

the most sensible post in this entire thread and totally true....ive owned both, was very dissapointed with the way the mk2 handled, yes it was nice and comfy and came loaded with toys, could do 1000 miles in it without batting an eyelid, but it was a yawn mobile, doesnt handle anywhere near as well as the mk1....i want a sportscar to perform like a sportscar, for me the mk2 was no different in driving feedback than oh so many shopping chariots.

The problem stems from the fact that toyota lost the original concept idea and made the mk2 far too mainstream,so much so that mk1 owners dont recognise any of the mk1 in the mk2.But we can see shades of the mk1 in the mk3,this tends to alienate mk2 owners who dont like being told their car isnt a true sportscar, but it is in fact a GT.I didnt hate my mk2,but the reality is that if id never driven a mk1 beforehand id still be driving a mk2 claiming it to be the bees knees and the best mr2 ever built...as alex says, until you have owned or extensively driven both you cant really comment.

Thanks for the dictionary quote of the literal meaning of the word "modernise" michael,id be lost without you :D ,i do agree with you though, threads like this can rage forever but most of the mk2 defensive comments tend to only come from mk2 owners that have only owned mk2s,lets hear a bit more from those that have been and done both.

Just to put my bit in
Dont you think "look wise" it looks as though the order the 2's were launched were mk1, mk3 then mk2? not that im saying anything bad about either of the other 2 (the ones i dont own) I just think the later mk2 rev 4/5  look more "supercar" than the MX5/Z3 looks of the mk1 & mk3 just a thought 8)

Oooh like a lamb to the slaughter

No i don't agree, the MK3 is obviously the newer design as it can be clearly seen that is a baby boxster styling wise.

I think a Noble looks more like a supercar, the MK2 is more obviously a mid-range mass produced sports/GT type car. Sit one next to a Noble or GT3 and you'll see what i mean.

Also as the MK1 pre-dates the MX5 & Z3 you can't really say it looks like these. Obviously the MK3 is pitched fair and squarely with the MX5 as it is one of its main competitors.

I'm a girl and I like it so i'm not bothered there. But my boyfriend has had 6 MK1s so i can see a flaw in your theory! ;)

How about we say:

MK1 = drivers car for those who really like to drive
MK2= posers car for those who are happier going in straight lines

Sound fair? ;)

I've thrown both my MK2's round more corners and country lanes than any other car I have ever owned - (and I have owned bloody loads of sports cars......)

To me the MK2 had it all, great fun, fast, superb looks, relatively easy to work on.

It was a great progression from the dated MK1's when it was released.

It modernised the marque....

To me the MK3 never counted in the equation. It was a spider, it wasn't a representation of what had gone before.

But like a few others have already said, have you ever owned a MK1?

The Mk3 is a proper sports car! less than 1000kgs, limited slip diff, and no boot!

Haven't owned a MK1 myself, been in a few. They were good cars back in the day, last time I was in one was back in '94.

Don't get me wrong, I like the old girls. I'm always pawing over Jon Leech's.

Much prefer the MK2 'though. A more "complete" motor.

Nope! :)

If the Mk1 is such a drivers' car, why are these 'drivers' driving them and not something purer and lighter? Lotus Seven replica or Elise, etc?
