[Mk2] [NA] Strange jolting/knocking

Post by asmiffy79 »

When i'm reversing at full lock, i'm noticing that i get a jolt through the steering wheel, and the front of the car seems to jolt across too.
It's just passed the MOT this week.

Any ideas?

It's a '94 L G-Ltd import
Standard suspension and wheels.
The jolting occurs when turning left or right at full lock, and feels a bit like the wheel has gone through a pot hole.

I had the same problems with mine too, when reversing on full lock it made a banging noise every few seconds and the outside wheel felt like it was dragging sideways. Turned out it was the wheel alignment, specifically way too much camber on the front wheels. Once I got a 4 wheel alignment done and all the camber settings sorted the problem went away. Might be worth checking your wheel alignment settngs.

jolting / knocking on full lock

Post by dobbar »

Just to resurrect this thread, I have exactly the same symptoms.

It started happening after changing my hubs over (car on axle stands for a couple of months). Since then I've changed the steering rack / top mounts / droplinks and ball joints - still to no avail. If anybody has any ideas please post them up as it's quite disconcerting to pull out of your drive and feel as if someone is hitting your wheels with a sledgehammer !

Have you had your wheel alignment checked? If not you should, especially after changing that many suspension/steering components.

What condition are your tyres in?
When I first bought my mk1 I had this problem, had cheap badly worn tyres on the front, the problem disappearred when I changed my tyres.
