[All] [Turbo] Removing Crank pulley

Post by Ed »

Hi

What's the best type of puller to use in order to remove the crank pulley.

I was considering getting the Draper 10 Tonne Hydraulic Puller Kit. Is this overkill or are there any better options?

Also when using the puller does the crank pulley bolt still need to be screwed in to the pulley (obviously not the crank as well), just wandering what the puller pushes agianst?

The BGB shows the use of 2 screwdrivers, so thats how I did it on mine.
Hardest part is locking the crank still to get the pully bolt undone.

Mine is a spare block that I have that I will be getting rebuilt. The pulley doesn't have the crank bolt, but the pulley doesn't want to shift and I don't fancy knackering 2 of my screwdrivers.

A 10 tonne hydraulic puller is a little bit of an overkill

A mechanical 3 legged puller should be fine. Once you break the initial friction, it should come off easy enough.

Also when using the puller does the crank pulley bolt still need to be screwed in to the pulley (obviously not the crank as well), just wandering what the puller pushes agianst?

The bolt screws into the nose of the crank, not the pulley at all. A little confussed by this question :-s

I'd say do it without the bolt in place, as long as the nose of the puller is larger than the ID of the thread, otherwise you risk damaging the thread in the crank.

hth :)
