Mechanic with 4AGE experienced wanted! – Norfolk Area - Advice also required.

Post by LukeQuake »

Ladies and Gents,

I have a little issue with my 2 :( - Basically only when cold, when the auto choke comes off the engine will start idle hunting (between 1k – 2k) until it reaches temperature, once it has the car is fine, apart from a little 700rpm ‘shake’ when stationary in traffic where the steering wheel vibrates a little but nothing major.

I’ve taken it to my local garage (the guy there used to have a 2) and they are pretty clued up on all things mechanical but they cannot find the cause of this particular fault with my car.

They 1st though it was due to the K&N so tried changing various leads etc, but this issue only started about 2 months ago and the K&N has been on the car for well over 6 months without any issues.

Do you guys have any idea what this might be or who in the Norfolk area I take it to have a look at?

I really want to get this sorted! Everything else on my car is perfect apart from this.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Luke

Start the car and have it running and warm, remove the induction hose off the throttle body. At 5 o'clock possitionwise inside the throttle body there is a small intake hole, put your finger over it, if the car stalls its the waxtstat. (this is an easy thing to do, try yourself, dont pay a garage!!!)

If it is the waxstat there are 2 options, swap the throttlebody for a good second hand unit, or a manual choke conversion. but check first to confirm.

Where abouts in norfolk are you?

If the car goes "REVVV drop REVVV drop REVVV drop" between 2000 and 1000rpm at about 1 second intervals then it's probably air in the coolant. Top up and bleed the system and it'll go away.

Yes I know it sounds silly, but it's very common I promise :thumleft:

Sorry Luke should have got back to you by now.

I'd had a read around and reckoned it was probably the waxstat but hadn't got around to letting you know and arranging a time for you to come over. Should be free sometime this weekend if you're about.

Will be sorting this with Kaiowas tomorrow! :)

Does anyone have a picture of this 'waxstat' so that I know what to look for?

If you look at the bottom of the throttle body you will see 2 water hoses going to the throttle body where they connect is the waxstat or to give it it's proper name AAV ( Auxiliary Air Valve )

If you use these instructions while it is revving up and down it and it goes back to normal or stalls, then it's the AAV. if it is you could try taking the water hoses off and flushing the AAV with a hose in both directions, it sometimes works

It's the Waxstat for sure! :) - Going to purchase a choke conversation kit from Paul Woods to 'work around' the issue. :)
