[Mk2] [Turbo] New wheel bearings gone in all to willy

Post by dobbar »

Just started replacing suspension parts, took steering knuckles / stub axles to a local garage to press in 2 new wheel bearings, got them back today and it looks as if they've put both of them in slightly askew.

Although it's difficult to make out in the picture, the parts pointed to by the yellow arrows are different heights.

Could someone confirm this from the (rather poor) picture below.

If they are then I'll be in the market for two steering knuckes / bearings etc

Thats what I thought, if you look in the bgb it shows a lip inside the steering knuckle where the bearing stops, if the shiny part is the bearing then they've managed to push it through the lip !!

I wanted some who does this for a living (peter gidden / rogue etc) to tell me
that is the case and they're ruined or that I can tap it back to level with a socket and hammer.

I'll bet it's been pushed in off centre and they've only managed to get it in that far!

Had a local machine shop do the same to my old hub, as a result i'm now on my 3rd bearing in 8 months  needless to say it's a genuine jap part going in and the local Toyota garage are fitting it :thumleft:

Trust me mate, don't let any old numpty push your bearings in and always get genuine parts

Many thanks for all of your replies, I'm lucky in that I have another car.

This is why I try and do as much work as I can myself as EVERY time I've taken any of my cars to a garage they always stuff something up.

What do you wrekon is the best course of action now ?

1) another 2 new bearings, hope the garage hasn't wrecked the hubs by driving these ones in at an angle, and have the 2 new ones pressed in again

OR

2) another 2 new bearings, steering knuckle and stub axle, get toyota to do it, kachinnnng.

OR

3) Down the scrappies and hope for the best.

I still don't understand how they managed to press them in past the lip, as per the BGB they are pressed in from the inside out. (from the hub nut end towards the wheel) ?????

It's a while since I changed mine (hard work with just a vice and a lump hammer), but are you not looking at the seal rather than the bearing? If so it's probably not too critical, and you should be able to square it up with a lever/screwdriver without pulling the hub apart.

That does look like the inner race has been left on... but not having them in my hand its impossible to tell.

IF the bearing hadnt gone in square, its not too hard to correct before putting the stub axle in, but now id guess its too late. Id take a trip back to the garage you got them pressed in at and ask them to fix it.
