[Mk2] [NA] mr2 gltd engine modifications

Post by ross2 »

hello, i have just purchased a 1992 j plate mr2 gltd and im wondering what sort of engine modifications are best to eek that little more power from the engine?
Am i correct in thinking that these have 158bhp as standard?
i have previously owned impreza wrx's and pulsar gtirs and wanted something a bit cheaper and have some performance with the looks also so the mk2 mr2 fits the bill exactly :D

cheers

Hi Ross,

With the N/A there are seriously diminishing returns for your money.

Airfilter/de-cat/exhaust upgrade are about it.

You could change the cams.... I missed out on a head that was said to be 190 bhp with the cam set up.

Generally if you have an N/A, tart them up.......Tubbies for speed.

cheers mate will probably just concentrate on sprucing up the paintwork and maintaining the servicing of the engine then.
158 bhp is quick enough for me on an n/a i think.
happy with that

Spot on. Enjoy the car for what it is. Serviced regularly, these engines will give you years and years of enjoyment. And, as Jay said, get the chassis and brakes sorted and you'll have a great car.

cheers fella's, all info greatly appreciated, will concentrate on maintaining the engine to a high standard and getting it gleaming with a few subtle body mods.

I'd get an induction kit and a nice exhaust. Won't make it go any faster but the sound sure helps it feel like it is!

Agreeing with everyone else here.... induction, de-cat and exhaust are as far as engine mods can usefully go. Other mods to consider moving to the chassis... If it's a t top get a decent front strut brace. A quickshift and smaller wheel are always good mods to aid 'driveability', then consider lowering springs (not too low tho on british roads). Those plus a bit of styling should see you happy. :D

adjustable koni shock inserts transformed the handling on the NA i'm working on now. i would highly recommend them :thumleft:
with 30-35mm drop the car site great on 16" wheels for the perfect balance between turning and speed.

later you could do poly bushes, anti roll bars and drop links. strut braces (as said above) are a big help.

and last but defo no least..... TYRES! if you have rubbish tyres then your never going to get the best out of your car. i swear by goodyear eagle f1. both the gsd3 and older gsd2 are great tyres and will stick in all weather conditions.

enjoy your car.

p.s. what did you do to your R? i'm building a pair of race GTiRs for next season.

hi mate, mods on the better gtir i had were as follows
pipercross ind kit
hks ssqv
pace front mounted intercooler
blitz dual ssbc boost controller
helix 3 puc paddle clutch
tein coilovers
full mongoose de catted zorst
hks 1.2mm metal head gasket which i blew lol my air flow meter xxxxx up whilst i was driving up the road to dundee from nottingham and the head gasket took a battering.
so that was the end of my gtir as i couldnt afford the astronomical repair bills i was being quoted.
