Mister Two? Do you have a Cat?

Post by KrisMoyse »

Took my 1991 N/A Rev1 MR2 MkII to my local garage the other day to get a bit of corrosion sorted out and I asked my mechanic if he could fit a de-cat pipe for me once I'd bought one (yes I know they're easy to fit but I don't have much spare time so..).

He did the corrosion and when he brought my car back to me he said that it doesn't have a cat.

Were any Mk2's released by Toyota without cat's?

Did any Rev 1's come with cat's fitted?

Cos if some had cats and some didn't surely that means that the listed 158bhp for the rev 1 is actually more for those without cats rather than those with.

Anyone shed some light on this?

Does your mechanic know a lot about MR2's???

The first place i took my rev 3 NA to said that it didn't have a cat.....Thats cos they were looking up near the engine where a turbo has the cat......

Some people are stupid enough to not realise that the cat sits directly behind the exhaust box

You may not have a cat but i would check again just by jacking the back of the car up and looking behind the exhaust...

Is it quite a loud exhaust note or fairly tame....

So what am I looking for? Any pics of a cat/no cat MR2?

When my foot is down or just idle? I've never had/driven another MR2 so I have no idea about the sound...

UK spec Rev 1 didn't have a cat, but JDM ones ( and those for various other markets ) did have one.

Yep,

My Rev1 UK was fitted with a baffle where the cat goes. Although I've got a straight through Powerflow system now.

More of a dog person anyway

Does this restrict performance at all? And if so can it be replaced with a decat pipe?

Whether or not you need one is probably a question only you can answer, Kris. I can't imagine it will make a big difference in terms of raw power, but as Tesco say every little helps! Also, you'd get a nicer sound I would imagine, and probably a little lift in torque also.

Overall, it's probably one of the most cost-effective ways of gaining a little bit more kick. Tuning NA cars extensively tends to result in diminishing returns, but a few basic mods can probably make a noticeable improvement for a relatively small outlay. Mine has a de-cat, filter and exhaust and sounds wonderful. I would consider the money well-spent for the noise alone, regardless of any power gains. But it’s also around 20lb/ft up on the standard car, which is pretty good for an NA engine imho. Give it a try mate!!

Hi Kris,

Rev1 UK with the baffle HAD 158bhp, Rev2 with the CAT had 154bhp so it's less restrictive than the CAT. Could imagine a small increase with the de-cat pipe over the original 158. :-k :-k for both Rev1 and 2??

A few people have just gutted the baffle rather than replace it with a de-cat.

Did have some pics of it but deleted them after it was sold

Sounds good matey but isn't that for a turbo though or does it not make a difference? (looked at your car)
