[Mk2] [Turbo] SAFE BOOST ON REV3 TURBO?

Post by turbokev »

Iv got a rev3 turbo with an apexi induction kit, uprated aftermarket intercooler,IC fan runs continously,BRK7E plugs, engine shroud removed from engine cover, extreme boost downpipe, mongoose exhaust and im running approx 16.5psi(peaks just over 17 then holds 16.5psi),just wondering if this is a safe boost level to run?

Difficult to say really. I'm happy with the stock boost as it's how Toyota intended it and feels quick enough for me. Having said that, with an aftermarket IC you should be okay running 17psi as long as you don't hammer it to full boost everywhere all the time.

like everything else if you raise performance you could highlight weaknesses in the system however you are running sensible engine upgrades re the intercooler so yeah it should be fine as you are running within the std fuel maps.

Mmm bit of a mish mash that answer

You can run 1.15 bar now and then will be fine. For safety running just over a bar all day no problems.

Main thing is you have and aftermarket IC & shroud kit.

I run mine @ 1.15 bar when ever I drive it but dont always boost that high or hard to prolonged times (mile-upon-mile at any one time) - just allow the car to warm up properly & warm down properly is equaly important.

WOnt ever beat getting car mapped though.

Running: 313.8BHP @ fly and 285lb torque on 1.15bar.

Just stick with 16psi - that way you know your safe. Its only 10odd bhp - not really worth risking a blow up for that surely??

There was a member on the GT4OC who was running an ST205 (rev3 engine basically) at 1.6 bar, and it made (iirc!) approx 440 bhp @ the flywheel.

This was on standard internals, but with an A/M ECU and turbo.

The only reason the engine died was that an injector went west, which would even melt a forged engine.

Just thought I'd mention that lol.

I think were talking on std turbo here though.

Cheers guys.Im really anal about warming the car up before driving it hard anway,i wait till quite a long time after the waters up to temp just to make sure the oil's hot too.
I find im not driving it as hard as with lower boost because you don't need to push it as much to get her shifting.Iv found the boost delivery nicer with the TVSV disconnected too.
I just needed the 2 to be that bit quicker over std cos it felt slower than my previous car,but power is addictive so more mods n power are bound to follow lol

The next upgrade would be an ecu - link or power fc with a tune up. That way you can run upto 1.2 bar safely and yeild results up to 320 @ fly.

IMHO the only way you can say it is safe is to get it on the rollers and check for det and a/f ratios. If you have boost leaks etc or anything else untoward for that matter your engine could go pop. As you are not mapping it should cost that much and certainly less than a new engine!

Similar mods to mine so as Nathan says get yourself an aftermarket ECU and then get it mapped by someone recomended by others within the MR2 community.

Mine has an uprated fuel pump and bigger injectors fitted and those allowed RC (who mapped mine and drinks fuel like no tomorrow) with stock internals and turbo to run 1.3bar and it's been doing that since last April. Made 313bhp and 293lbft @ the fly so was quite pleased :)

As already mentioned never plant your right foot on a cold engine and after a hard run allow to cool down and drive off boost for a few mins before turning the engine off and change the oil and filter regularly :thumleft:

but whatever you do, no matter how hard it cries or begs ... never feed it after midnight :clown:
