[Mk2] [NA] Gearbox is out!

Post by fishyboy »

Hi folks,

I have taken out my gearbox and it's away getting a new 5th gear kit and the syncro's replaced. I was just wondering what i should be replacing/upgrading while this is out? So far i have already bought the following:

Short shifter kit (Ebay)
Metal gear linkage bushes (Sbits)
New clutch (Blueprint)

I was looking at getting a lightened and balanced flywheel, but they're a bit too expensive to justify!

Cheers in advance

Are you using the improved Rev3+ synchros for ur rebuild? That would be a smart move. They are stronger than Rev 1+2...

Probably not,

i handed the box to a gearbox specialist, i'll ask to see if he's replaced them with rev 3 ones, i doubt it though. Didn't realise ther was a difference tbh. I'm not constantly hammering it so it shouldn't make to much of a difference. I'll find out.

Cheers for the quick reply mate.

P.S. anymore suggestions are welcome.

while the rear subframe is off you could change the rear anti roll bar bushes for poly ones.

if you have the new shifter bearings, short shifter kit, a better clutch and your sorting the box then the only other thing really is the flywheel. or an lsd i spose.

oh and a full clutch fluid change. flush it through and put all new fluid in there. the one i just finished doing had what looked like marmite in the fluid!! dont think it had ever been changed.

Yeah,

i've been looking for a lightweight flywheel but they're so expensive! Have toyed with the idea of getting a mate to take some weight off my current flywheel but i'ma bit scared that i'll ruin it! Will defo change the clutch fluid now after waht you've just said! Where would be the best place to get some ARB poly bushes? twosrus?

There will be a safety factor on the flywheel what it is I have no idea. You will be able to take some material off but you would have to do all the enginering first its not just a case of cuts bits poff here and there etc.

You would also have to get it rebalanced afterwards to ensure no vibrations going through the gearbox etc.

In my opinion get a lightened one or leave your stockie alone don't try and lighten yours.

Yeah mate i think you're right. I'll leave the flywheel for now. i'll just need to bite the bullet to take the gearbox out again when i can afford it! Cheers for all the help guys :thumleft:

im currious to know if you dont mind telling me how much is the gearbox going to cost you. Im thinking of getting a new gearbox for my car but have also thought about just taking my old box (it still works fine) to a gearbox specialist for them to check/replace any worn parts??

full rebuilds cost £600+ depending on how much needs replacing and the garage's prices
