[Mk2] [Turbo] AFM

Post by longone1981 »

right was playing with the new turbo last night and its a monster. but this then lead to me noticing how restrictive the AFM is on the rev 2. now i have an fc so not really wanting to go down the rev 3 route and need a new ecu. is there any other AFM that could be fitted thats less restictive or any way of losing it on the rev2 fc.

thanks in advance for youir help

You really want to go 'hotwire' like the scoobies and nissan 200's.

Dunno if it's possible.

On various sites it has been proven that AFM's are not actually that restrictive until high power. If you are going for high power then you'll have probably gone down the standalone ecu/rev3 route by that point anyway and ditched the AFM anyway.

It's the way in which it works that is not that accurate/ideal.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. If you fit a bigger one you still have the restriction anyway....little that it is.

cheers john the thing is i already run a power fc for a rev 2 not sure what i have to do to lose the afm though. we are talking quite big power as in a HKS T04s turbo and complete forged engine.

Ahhhhhh I see....damn shame it isn't Rev3 FC. Perhaps worth contacting Apexi to see if there is a way of converting to MAP based sensing.

I know what you mean about changing to a hotwire setup though loads of the BMW crowd do it on theirs.

Right who know's of a hotwire sensor that works in the right range?

How are basing this as i have only found the afm to become a restriction over 300rwhp and its only like 5bhp.

I take it you have a ap engineering powerfc then if your running on rev2 gear.

The car is actaully not using the afm to work out fueling tho it will be using the stock rev2 map sensor. This is limited to 16psi. So dont boot it more than that, in fact dont boot it at all if not mapped.

The afm is needed at present tho as it has a built in air temp sensor which the powerfc is using to get readings. What you need to do it remove the afm and using the black and brown wires going to it (5th and 7th pins) connect up a MAT sensor. This need to be placed in the intercooler piping somewhere after the intercooler and before the TB. I wouldn't bother putting in the cold start location it just heat soaks.

Then by the sound of it as your running a bigger turbo i would put a GM 3bar map sensor or rev3 map sensor on it to allow it to read higher boost and then enjoy.

If you need any more info contact me as i have mapped loads of these and installed
