[Mk2] [Turbo] Berk Exhaust arriving 2mrw...fitting question

Post by alan1150 »

After toying with idea of a new exhaust or 2nd hand one i've ordered a berk cat back system from gtschris. (my girlfriend thinks the name berk is quite appropriate...spending nearly £400 for an exhaust).
Anyway i was originally thinking of going kwik-fit or somewhere and paying them to fit it as they have ramps etc. But after a crawl around looking under car today all bolts look pretty accessable. I aint got ramps just wondering has anyone managed to change system with use of just a jack and axle stands. Doesn't look like much more than 1/2hr to an hr of work, is it worth having a go or just pay to get it done.

alrite mate, i bought a berk from gtschris aswell fitted it with axle stands no probs. The flexi section was no prob 2 fit bout 10 mins, but the rear boxes were really aqward due to the hangers not being in the rite place but it took bout 2 hours in all, n it was well worth the wait, its easy enough jus put aside 2 hours wosre case sinario

Thats the opposite to what i would have expected, thought the bolts on downpipe might cause some grief due to rust etc. Will see what weather is doing when i fin work 2mrw, if its raining will go garage. Dry day i'll give it a go myself.
Its gonna be a busy wk on the mr2 fingers crossed my arc induction box will arrive towards end of wk. Hopefully these 2 mods will give a little boost in performance.

I put mine on on our lift, but I agree with the above poster on the hangers- the lhs one on mine was about 2 inches too far toward the back of the car. I had to modify the bracket on the car to make it reach.

From experience i would say allow a lot more time than you would expect. If you are still using a stock exhaust system, then i would say an angle grinder is probably required, as some of the sections near to the back box will be very rust, and the nuts will be so corroded you cant get a socket on.
It not the easiest of jobs, but if you are competent and patient then you will be fine. Just adopt a methodical approach and you will be fine. :thumleft:

It's a doddle!

I did have a problem with the lining up the exhaust brackets with the exhaust hangers but if you loosen their bolts to their last thread you can easily force the exhaust bracket on then just tighten the bolts.

I fitted mine with the car on jack stands. I had no issues with the exhaust hangers, they were perfectly located. Total install took less than an hour.

I recall the pain involved in trying to remove the original flexipipe section over the subframe where the two parts had rusted together.

Very glad of the dremel and the angle grinder that day!
Why thank you - I grew it myself you know

Berk is now fitted, i paid kwik-fit £20 cash in hand job. It went on very smoothly.(dropped car off during my break at work and was ready for when i left off). Everything fitted together as it should no need for any bodging or bracket adjusting.
Sounds great....not too loud just a nice deep sound just what i was after. Also seems to boost more in 2nd gear, some definate improvement in performance. Would recommend this exhaust to anyone as it looks and sounds the part even with the cat still in place.
Will have to get some pics done shortly.
