[Mk2] [Turbo] Strange knocking noise from front

Hi all,

My car has started to make a strange knocking noise, more like a "clucking" noise when I drive over bumps in the road - like somethings rather loose. Noise seems to be coming from behind the dashboard, making it if either wheel hits a bump. However its rather unpredictable.

Now i've made sure it wasn't anything I was carrying in the front, including battery, and with my limited knowledge checked the front suspension for any play but didn't find anything.

Advice on what to try next would be welcome. Is there anything under the plastic floorplans that could cause it.

Droplinks! Do a search on here - it's been covered quite a lot. They wear and then make that exact noise when driving over bumps. Before I discovered this forum, I tried removing all loose items from my boot, frunk and car interior thinking it was something rattling around...

There are other possible causes, too, but droplinks are most likely and they are relatively cheap and easy to replace, so that should be your first port of call.

Thanks, I'll check them over the weekend. Should really have thought of that - i'm in the process of changing my pug 205 ones at the minute.

Knocking from behind the dash could also be caused by the top mounts

also the front antiroll bar bushes.. had this happen and it makes a right racket over bumps or pot holes. you can just see them as the bar goes through them and under the plastic undertray.

Had a look at the car today and looked at all those areas but couldn't find anything wrong. Couldn't make it rattle or knock.

Is it fairly obvious to tell when either the drop links, top mounts or roll-bar bushes are gone?

Droplinks - unbolt them and tie them and the ARB out of the way then drive around (slowly). If the clunk's gone it was them

Top mounts - jack up each corner and get someone to lift the wheel up and down while you feel the top of each strut from inside the frunk/engine bay to see if it has any play.

ARB bushes - grab the ARB while your drop links are off and see if there's any excess play.
