[Mk2] [Generic] Tyre tread depth markers?

Post by Greddy-Matt »

Hi guys I know you need 1.6mm of tread across 2/3 of the tyres to be legal, but where do you take this measurement from? I cant see any markers on the tyres.

Tyres are Toyo Proxes, thanks people :D

AFAIK you measure anywhere you want although obviously not on the shoulders where the tread tapers into the sidewall.

Confused what you mean by markers - do you mean tread wear indicators? They're the ridges in the tread that correspond to the arrows on the tyre wall that when the general tread gets down to their level means the tyre needs replacing, although I don't know if they're set at 1.6mm or an arbitrary figure.

I'd replace once the tread gets to around 3-4mm though as wet performance is seriously impaired below that level.

You need to have 1.6mm accross the middle 2/3rds of the width of the tyre. In other words, you are allowed 1/6th either side, but its is the centre part that is most important.

I wouldnt take any notice of tread wear indicators, they are only an indicator. Tread depth varies from country to country, and as tyres are manufactured for the global market, you never know exactly the depth of the indicator. For example, its 2.0mm in Germany.

Cheers guys, didn't know if it was to be measured at a specific point across the central 2/3's, thanks for clearing that up for me :thumleft:
