[Mk2] [NA] Exhaust baffles

Post by chiefymcchief »

Hi all,

I have a 91 na. Believe it has a standard exhaust.

I am getting a vibration / rattling noise when engine is revved to 3k plus. mainly noticeable when change up at these revs (on the over run)

Been told the baffles(?) have gone in the exhaust. Would this give thistype of noise?

Cheers

It certainly would.

It might also be worth checking any of the heat shields around the exhaust too, they'll make a similar noise if they've come loose :)

Cheers Slarty,

Where abouts in the exhaust are the baffles? backbox?

I ask as it seems like some of the vibrations can come from almost under the centre of the car, between the seats and under the centre storage box.

Mechanic said heatshields were all fine ... looks like new shiny stainless exhaust for me then ... any suggestions for a quiet ish exhaust ...

Cheers

I must admit I'm not that familiar with the N/A exhaust, but as far as I'm aware, the main silencer is in roughly the same place as the turbo, which is under the "boot" floor.

Maybe the noise is travelling?

As for a new exhaust, the Mongoose seems to be pretty popular (again, I'm not all that on N/A systems) and can be had for a pretty good price :thumleft:

Try a search for exhausts, it's been covered many times :)

Loose heatshileds^^^^ Loose bolts, perished gaskets.......

Could be a nuber of things....Whip the backbox off and make sure all other fixings are tight and that gaskets are all in good condition. Bolt it back on nice and tight....If the rattle continues it would point towards the baffles :thumleft:
