[Mk2] [NA] Next mods....

Post by RST »

Well, having had my engine swapped a few months back I'm now wanting to tinker with it. I've decided to shelf the re-spray till winter time and I won't be driving the car anyway and look at some mild mods to the BEAMS.

I'm currently running the stock engine and air box with HKS panel filter, de-cat and stainless exhaust.

I'm overdue delivery now of an imported SARD induction kit through Sumopower, and have spoken to Dastek recently about fitting a chip and putting it on the rolling road to set-up the lot properly. Hopefully the chip will take care of air/fuel issues and the CAMCON VVT-i controller won't be required but that remains to be seen. Apparently there are issues with VVT-i induction kits due to the location oif the air flow sensor so having spoken to a few folk, the SARD one seemed the safest bet.

Dastek reckon something between +5-10% is realistic with more pull mid-range (which is really what I'm after rather than anything top end). That would possibly see up to 10-20Bhp. But we'll wait and see about that. I changed my mind about going down the Link ECU route as the cost doesn't justify it for these mods.

...that puts it a bit closer to rev 1 turbo power and it has the same gearbox ratio's I believe from another posting regarding maximum speed in each gear.

Hopefully soon I'll have some dyno results to post. I appear to be a bit of a guinea pig with this engine (just going to have to try it) so I'll make sure I post on any positive results.

Yes.

I've not dyno'd so not going to quote hard and fast figures but Toyota tuned the BEAMS (stock) to 197/198Bhp so with a de-cat and stainless, maybe it's there according to the paperwork). Engine's from a '97 though so it'll be lower than that I expect as it's got 65,000 miles on it.

If I can get 210-220Bhp from it I'll be very very happy indeed as there's a few other things that can be done without doing internals. Otherwise I'll settle for 200Bhp unless a dyno run comes up well short, then I'll be happy enough with a "before" and "after" driving feel.

Anything more than that and it's Turbo time but I'm trying to stay away from that as far as I can. Rogue are working on something along the turbo route at the moment.
