[Mk2] [Turbo] rev2 turbo - engine light coming on from time to time!

when my friends car is turned on every light on the dash will disappear apart from the engine management light. this only happens from time to time but seems to happen at the worst times lol

the car may idle at just under 1000rpm and once you try to move off the car will die. if you leave the car for 10-15 seconds and try to start it again it is fine.

any advice on what to do or what the problem is?
is this something worrying or is it a warning for worse things to come?

do a diagnostic check mate which will most likely give you a pointer

he said he was thinking about doing a diagnostics test on it but he was worrying about driving it in the mean time as he drives it to work

do you think its still safe to drive the car in the mean time?

diagnostics test showed code 31
all hoses are perfect with no splits or cracks.
code 31 points to air flow meter - does this mean replacing the whole air box or can it be dismantled.
does any one know a price for one of these? or where to get one?
