spammers

Post by Quigonjay »

must be a nightmare for the mods having to delete all the posts and all the accounts and they seem to be increasing in the frequency they appear
are these real people spamming the forums or bots?
is there nothing that can be done?

Maybe something on the forum coding side. Depending on the platform/version used, some allow for use of extra registration steeps like enter the code on the screen to stop them registering and getting in in the first place.
Once they are registered as a user I think its harder to stop them, only answer is manual deletion of posts/account.

Its most likely that they are bots sent out by sites containing viruses, etc.

Yup - they do tend to have picked up again recently (I tend to be on here late at night a lot and report them whenever I see an unreported one)...

I suspect we should blame Harry - as they seem to be linked to his picture postings. Whenever he writes a post filled with pictures... suddenly the spammers come out the woodwork... as though his pictures are like a magnet to them!

Draven, I am sure i recall you saying when you stepped down as a mod that humour would be your main aim and that you would transform into a comedian.

Is this likely to be coming any time soon?

Agree though, spam count is getting higher and higher despite us actually integrating greater measures into the forum code to prevent this. The spammers we are getting now are more likely to be actual people than spambots. We have talked about having manual authorisation but with so many people signing up daily it is a bit of a task, though i guess it is possible.

Trouble is everyone is already quite busy as it is, so we need to think if we can really take on the extra workload that would entail.

I think it was just particularly noticeable this weekend as there weren't many/any mods or admin about.

Usually spam accounts are deleted before they even get to post... but vigilance is the key :cyclops:
