[Mk2] [Generic] Strange central locking problem

Post by gayno »

Hope someone could help me out here.

When inside the car, the lock/unlock switch operates the locks fine as they should.

If trying to UNLOCK from either door, it unlocks both.

If trying to LOCK from either, it only operates that particular lock. There have been a couple of times where it's decided to work again and locking from the drivers door operates the central locking.

Also, every so often when I get into the car and close the door, the UNLOCK attempts again without me touching the button or turning the key, but obviously nothing happens as they're already unlocked, just get the clunking noise of them trying!!

Strange thing is though when I LOCK from drivers door, even if it doesn't operate the central locking, I still get the OEM alarm LED come on and the light ring around ignition barrel goes out, so it would appear some sort of signal is getting through along the LOCK wire....unless there's seperate wires for LOCK and ARM signals??

Any sugestions??

Hi mate,

there are seperate lock cables for the switch in the control panel in the driver's door and the switch on the back of the mechanical door lock.

The locks firing when you close the door strike me as an earth problem somewhere along the line. If the unlock cable from the door lock has become frayed or partly stripped, whenever it touches bare metal on the chassis it'll cause the locks act as if you'd activated the relevant switch.

My first suggestion would be to check the wiring from the two switches to the central locking ecu. The details of where the ecu is and the colour coding of the cables are available in an earlier post here: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... 170#592170

Pay particular attention to where the cables pass through from the door to the body (through the tube). Also any connections are not rusted etc.

Failing that it is possible that there is a fault in the central locking ecu, the theft deterrent system, or either of the two switches. But the wiring is the most likely culprit.

Any questions let me know :thumleft:
