[Mk2] [NA] Does my car have an alarm?

Post by teknof »

I just bought an MR2 and for the insurance I need to know if it has an alarm. There's a light on the dash that says "security" and a mysterious red switch under the steering wheel that doesn't seem to do anything, and I don't have a remote control keyfob or anything.

So basically what I want to know is: are alarms and immobilisers standard on MR2s? And if so how do I switch it on?

The car's a '91 imported Mk2 G-Limited.

Quick test (on a UK car at least):

The red LED should stay lit once you've locked the door from the drivers side for about 10 secs before it starts to flash -then the alarm / immob. is armed. You can test it by leaving a window open, locking it then opening the door from the inside.

You should get your indicators flashing, and the horn blaring in short pips. Lock the door again with the key to cancel.

....Dunno what the red switch is.

Hope this is of some use.

Thanks for the info, assuming it's the same on a jap car I guess a previous owner has disconnected it, or its just plain broken!

Anyway I won't bother fixing it, I don't think it makes much difference to the insurance.
