[Mk2] [Turbo] As tears roll down my face steam continues to come out of tubby!

Post by stjohnsafc »

Hiya guys

Got my car back from the garage yesterday after the overheating dilemma, after parting with £950 for a replacement head which needed skimming and testing, re-shimming, new cambelt, new radiator fitted.

Felt nice for the 20mile trip home temp gauge now working and stayed just below half way all the way....then about 1 mile away from home the turbo stopped boosting

Pulled up in the drive and got out engine sounded fine, popped the engine lid and steam started coming out, only a small amount tho, the engine was very hot, but the temp gauge was still half way?

When the car had finally cooled down a bit i checked the coolant tank and it was EMPTY! there was coolant in the system, radiator was hot, fans were blowing hot air, i could here a bubbling/gurgling sound

(then went to halfords got some coolant and a new rad cap as the one i have is a poxy Ebay type TOM'S 1.3 bar)

filled the coolant tank with around 2-2.5 litres, no leaks found, havnt taken it out yet as it was dark by the time i had finished

Any one got any ideas?

only things i can think of are Thermostat or Water Pump?

Cheers :thumleft:

Sounds like they havent bled the system properly. Although I've never run an engine so hot the turbo stopped booting - that would worry me.

When you say the coolant tank, i assume you're talking about the plastic tank on the rear engine bulkhead. If so, this is an expansion tank and should not be full, although when the engine is hot there should be fluid in there.
If you have air in the system and it got round to the water pump then it would simply sit there as the water pump wont be able to pressurise the air enough to force the water round.
follow the BGB instructions and bleed the system properly, its not hard, but it is a bit time consuming.

closest is Rogue or 3S, both over 100miles away!!

if anybody from south wales knows of a reliable mechanic in the south wales area familiar with the turbo, please let me know

ive spent £1400 and since i bought the car in april and ive driven it 3 times!! totalling about 35miles!!!

Any body got any ideas on why its producing steam, but the temp gauge reads as normal half way, none of this sudden drops and rises

just stays at halfway whilst producing steam? #-o

ive printed off the BGB guide on changing coolant, but surely if i had air locks i would be getting the drops and rises on the gauge? :-k

If anything has died due to the garage not bleeding the system properly, then i would be straight back up there , making sure they sort it! FOR FREE!
