[Mk2] [Turbo] i need a new turbo(xs one died)what would you suggest

Post by planted1 »

my turbo, having done less than 1k miles has more shaft play than hugh heffners playboy mansion.

i was warned against buying one,but because it was cheap i ignored the advice..........oh how i wish id listened #-o .
anyway,
i need to get myself a turbo thats good for around 350bhp at the fly
i have a ported standard ct26 manifold i also have a t3/4 tubular manifold
my rebuilt engine is more than up to the job,and fuelling has also been uprated, all to be controlled by a link ecu, which i understand allows me to ditch the afm.
can any body suggest a good turbo, moneys getting a bit tighter so no monster wallett eating turbo can be considered.
ct20 mebbe,or a "proper t3/4"
any ideas please :thumleft:

How much play is in it??

More to ask....
How comes you checked? Is it losing boost? Smoking?

I've an XS Power one, and I've got to say I can't imagine going back to the CT20b. It reminds me of my old CT26, but with better power.

I've still got my manifold-CT20bTurbo-Downpipe assembly in the shed - all taped up...

Should I keep it?

theres about 4mm play up and down and the same side to side.

when i removed the turbo and downpipe all in one,i tipped it at an angle and about two table spoonsfull of oil dripped out.

the exhaust manifold and downpipe are covered in a black gooey sooty/oily residue.
the car had been blowing clouds of white smoke on startup, took 15 mins for it to settle, but every time you dipped the throttle clouds of smoke again.

yesterday, started it up left it idling for 15 mins, then it overheated, the temp gauge was constant, bang on in fact, but it would be as the water temp sensor is reporting water temp as normal,
the reason it overheated i think was because it had burnt so much oil over the past month that their was insufficient oil to aid cooling,
so,
strip out today(holiday)and their is literally oil everywhere, exhaust, downpipe, exhaust manifold, inside the turbo.

if i were you i would hang on to your original manifold and downpipe , just in case.

4mm  if them blades had hit the housing and snapped off, you could have been looking at a new engine!!!!!

no warranty etc at all?

4mm

Suprised your not digging blades out the pistons!! And casting shards! Saying that the chargecooler would accomodate a lot of that, especially if there is a lot of oil...

What boost were you at?

Are the ringlands OK? :-k

trouble is it was from auto boost in the usa,so i would have to return it at my expense, then theres no garunteeing they wont say its oil starvation or something or other.

boost was set at 12 psi, pretty low really, and it was steady.

the ringlands i havent checked, the engines coming out anyway as ive finished my rev 2 engine to go in place of,so when i get it out it will be interesting to see.

unfortunately ill just have to wear the cost.

i brought it before the mega posts of back end last year,re xs power etc.
buy cheap,buy twice.

ct27 is pretty similar to the ct20b

probably best if you can save the rest of the set-up and just get a new t3/t4 turbo to bolt in place of the xs one.

maybe try Sbits, GTS Chris or Tim, see what they say ?

Have you considered sending the Turbo-XS unit to a UK turbo rebuilder?

Maybe the shell and core are good, and it just needs re-assembling correctly.

At least get an opinion first...

hi paul,

i must admit i hadnt considered it before this evening,
tbh the rest of the turbo looks quite well made, but, looks can be deceiving and i think i will never have the confidence in it i hoped i would have.

it wont end up on ebay either,i'd rather bin it than pass it on to someone.

ive had someone offer me a gt4082 genuine garrett, but im not sure whether this would be suitable, could anyone shine some light please. :thumleft:

A gt4088 is feccccckinn huuuuge mate

You would need a massive fuel system circa 1000 pounds alone!
twin plate clutch (minimum)
no desire to boost before 5k etc etc etc

VERY NICE the gt4088 but far too big for 99% of applications - a gt35r is pushing the street limits IMO

GT28rs kit from Tim @ tb-developments. Good for 300-350bhp and also modern in technology and design. I have one on my rev3 and absoloutely love it. Im on stock fueling with a built bottom end and boost increase etc etc and it pulls like a train. Very torquey and quick spooling.

If you want 350hp a ct20 is the wrong turbo.. might as well go for a dual ball bearing Garett unit, at least you know you haven't cut corners in terms of build quality and design.
