We've been invited to participate in the new Power Nights series at Silverstone circuit on Thursday 2nd August 2007. The format of the day is thus:

09:00 - 12:30 General Testing for All Race Groups
13:30 - 15:30 General Testing for All Race Groups
15:30 - 17:00 Qualifying Sessions
18:00 - 20:30 Double Header Races (2 x 10 minutes + 1 lap)
20:45 - 22:00 Party in the Paddock, Awards and BBQ (with spectators)

At this point, entry should be £300, but the organisers have kindly allowed us the previous £250 entry fee which includes the following:

- Testing, qualifying and two 10 minute + 1 lap races
- Team passes x 6, paddock vehicle pass x 1, car park pass x 1
- Souvenier programmes x 4
- Adult passes for spectators x 6 (valued at £15 each, extra at special rate)
- Party in the Paddock BBQ vouchers x 2 (extra at special rate)

In addition there are CASH PRIZES for podium finishers as follows:

1st place - £300
2nd place - £125
3rd place - £75

To give everyone a stab at the podium, the second race of the evening will be held in reverse finishing order of the first (ie last place starts in pole etc).

And if that wasn't enough, the whole event will be filmed for a one hour TV show on Motors TV!

The MR2 races are being part organised by Patrick Mortell @ Rogue.

Please see the following link for more details:

Contact Steve Vince (organiser of the MR2 Challenge) about the upcoming Nippon Challenge series...

Anyway...

Fantastic stuff. I'm assuming we've got our own grid due to a decent amount of entries. The only problem is we haven't received anything from the BRSCC yet. I'll phone them later. 8-[

Congratulations on your effort organising this, Patrick. :thumleft:

As I am not working, I may pop down for the day :thumleft:
Are Silverstone Charging for spectators? Does anyone want/need pit support

If I read his ideas correctly, it seems the Nippon Challenge will be open to all Japanese cars?
If that's the case, I fear the MR2's (no matter on MK or modifications) will not be competitive enough. Just look at some of the Jap stuff in the Time Attack. Will be good to support etc though 8)

Somebody wasn't at TOTB at the weekend...

Current thinking will limit all cars to the same power to weight ratio, which should even things out greatly. The only challenge to overcome is policing it but I have some ideas on that front.

Realistically, how? Unless you weigh and dyno every car mid race there's just too many ways of cheating... imho of course.

The idea is quite simple. You use one of these:

http://www.seight.com/AC22.html

Pre-program it with the minimum weight allowable and make it tamperproof. Then after the race the scrutineers can take the peak BHP recorded and if it's above that specified in the regs the car has trangressed either the power or weight restrictions and can be penalised or disqualified accordingly.

If we'd had our tickets sent out in time, then we'd have happily sent you some team passes out! It would have been great to have you help out "G". ;)

Unfortunately, we haven't even got our own tickets ATM.

Just hoping the forecast showers either don't arrive or are very light & short.

Karen's got to beat my 1:22.964 time from the Time Attack. Realistically she should beat 1:20, thanks to the suspension changes and more practice than I had! :thumleft:

What a good event! 8)

If the organisers push on with it, I think it will be a huge success.

The racing from all grids was a high standard and their were some very good battles going on with the MR2's and with no car/car contact. It was a pity a few fell off the black stuff, but this happens from time to time. Brilliant racing

I really like the idea that drivers gridded in reverse order for the second race. It worked very well. Not sure if it would work as well in the challenge series though... :-k
Very interesting to see the second race finish in almost the exact order they finished the first race despite the gridding 8)

Big thanks to Lynn and Patrick from Rogue who sorted our entry passes :thumleft:

How would such a unit deal with acceleration due to 'outside influences'?

Say for example you got a pretty hard tap from behind mid race, the acceleration experienced during this impact would be stored as the 'peak' value and could give an incorrect power figure.

I've since been in touch with Race Technologies and they already make a system like I described for race use. It's based on the DL1 datalogger which uses GPS, so direction of travel can be factored in. I figure an impact large enough to simulate 300bhp's worth of accelleration would cause a fair amount of damage...!

This system is already used in the BritSports series.

We had a great day and returned home to find our ticket pack!

Karen managed to clock a 1:18.5 in race 2 which was fantastic, considering how badly her suspension seems to be coping. Her performance is now being limited by my idiot attempts to improve things. 8-[

She had great fun racing with Jon Grimes.

I thought we were supposed to run to MR2C spec so we used our Falkens. They've taken quite a mullering so might need to sort something out on that score. Need to sort out better pad material, suspension, etc.

I'll work on Karen's in-car Race 2 video tonight and post it up to YouTube. Should be VERY interesting from what I could see as everyone went into Copse for the first time.

Thanks again to Patrick for helping organise things! :thumleft:
