I love the design, the sound, the handling, and the fact that it is unique, and the parent of all mid engined cars.
Its my first proper car (had a N plate 1.1 Fiesta for 3 weeks prior to getting the 2, so that doesnt count lol), and one that I am proud to own. Most people my age (19) have horrible, "modded" Saxos and Corsas etc. Having something different to everyone else is great.

Fiat X/19 in consumer cars was before the mr2, not sure about before that (apart from exotics of which there were quite a few before fiat or toyota got into 'MR' layouts), and in the US the Fiero was around the same time as the mr2.

Im sure it was the best an first at an affordable size.

The 1923 Benz Tropfenwagen was the first race car with mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout

Finally driven the old girl again after a 4 week break (through no fault of hers).

I can't put my finger on any one thing. I think everything that's been covered in this thread is spot on! :)

Things such as how this morning alone, a 25 minute drive... I laughed/smiled on no less than 7 separate occassions... And I have no radio in the car at the moment.

Or... again this morning a kid was sat in the passenger seat of a car slumped down. When he saw my car with the popped up headlights I saw him sit up then strain to stretch up further to get a good look as they passed in the opposite direction at slow speed.

The way it's a normal easy going car if you only take it up to 4k revs but becomes a sports car when you want it to - and achieving a fantastic gear change from 2nd - 3rd then 3rd to 4th is sooo rewarding.

The way the futility and inevitability makes me laugh when I shear a bolt or round a head due to rust, followed by crying shortly afterwards in anger and knowing full well what it'll take to sort out... and then the way I laugh again when the jobs done when I think how easy the whole job would've been if it wasn't down to "that one bolt".

The fact that so many times that I've driven it, I've still been smiling for a long while afterwards (looking like a madman I guess!)... or no matter how rubbish the day at work goes, I know that I will still be smiling after the drive home...

The choice I've got of hardtop/no top...

The way it's now so unique as there are not many around...

The comments I get from my friends and the arguments I now get to watch when they're deciding who gets to ride in my car... (and then their faces when I tell them I've come in the Peugeot... )

The list goes on... It was definitely the right car for me. It's the whole package I guess... but what a package!

Firstly I'd have to agree with pretty much everything Max has said, someone who's clearly as hooked on MK1's as me.

The noise is superb, the racing car howl at higher revs is addictive. I love the way you can chuck it around roundabouts. I adore the driving position, so comfy. I get a kick out of popping up the headlamps (OK I'm a big kid, I admit it. )
I love the fact that fixing them isn't beyond the wit of a keen amateur like myself.
I love the way little kids point at them when you're driving past ( 6 year olds don't suffer from badge snobbery, they just see a sports car).
I love the fact that in terms of 'bang for your buck' there's nothing close.
I really like the fact that I've got one.
I quite like being in a club of like minded nutters too, nobody else understands...... :(

It's just such a shame there aren't more cars like it.

Yup - I agree 100% Karl... :)
Like you, I think the pop-up lights are fantastic and try to show them off whenever I can just so I can see them again! :)

And the club is an absolutely great part of the ownership of these cars too and makes it that much more enjoyable!

The mk1 still has quite a following too. Most people will know what one is, i remember stopping off at a petrol station after i first got the car and the old guy at the counter was.

"Oh wow an MR2, i had one of those!!!...Oh wait no, it had me in the end as i crashed.... " Which was a bit random :clown:

1. Little kids and pi$$ed-up posh birds in St-Andrews think it's a Ferrari (makes I laugh!).
2. It's so much fun to drive! Will out-handle an awful lot of things out there! I'm no SLJ so it's fine for me!
3. I'm 100% in love with mine...and it's mine...and not yours (anyone elses!)
4. You don't usually see another one every day.
5. Awesome Club(s) Spirit...no matter whether you're IMOC, MR2OC, TB...if you meet another owner you'll have a good natter :)
6. I love cars from the late 80's...90% of the time if it's C->G reg I'll love it. It's a wierd affliction but it got me in my mk1.
7. I can run it on student-sponge type money!

What a great thread

I adore my mk1 - this is my second one - i sold the first one then regretted it so much i bought one exactly the same two months later

The daftest thing i love about it is - looking down the side of the car out of my wing mirror and seeing a straight line across the top of the door that follows back to the boot - i love how retro that is !(stupid as it sounds!)

I love the attention the car gets -it NEVER fails to get a second glance from somebody anywhere i go in it.

I love seeing another mk1 coming down the road - they always look amazing and it makes me realise why people stare at mine!

I love how comfy the seats are - i could drive forever and not get sore

I love how quirky it is - from the teeny weeny boot - to the t-bar panels (always get funny looks when i take them out lol) and all the retro dash board - its so funky

Most of all i love how much it suprises people - they pull up at the lights and must just see it as an old car - i cant get enough of proving them wrong! ha ha ha (i know i should but i really get a kick out of beating them off the lights :D )

I could go on all day but i wont

Theres nothing quite like being able to remove the majority of bits from your car with a 10mm socket and a philips screwdriver, it makes fixing things so much fun!
I really couldnt tell you how to take apart a modern car!

-Pop up lights, yes!
-Leaking T-Bar, gets my passengers wet i laugh!
-No poncy lack of feeling power steering!
-I love the dials and guages, they are timeless, especially with the lights on :D

a couple more additions:

The SC Light coming on when I floor it :)
The SC Whine that accompanies it!

once had 2 guys walk past it parked up, the GF told me (she was in it while I was in the shop) that one of them had said "Now that's what I call a 'Car'". And people in general either knowingly appreciating the car or extremely curious as to wtf it is... it looks so different to ANYTHING on the road, yeah it looks old but it looks better amongst modern traffic than it did in the 80's cos it looks like an intentional retro-statement rather than trying to be a poor mans ferrari.

The spacious interior (for a tiny 2 seater MR car) and very adjustable/comfortable (though in my case worn black leather) seats.

The proximity of the rear window, always feels special.

The ability to pop the t-bar shades in to darken the interior (aka normal car) or leave them out for an airy feel (regardless of weather - unlike the t-tops themselves which in my case only come out a few days each year).

The 'DIY RACE CAR' feel, and working on the engine in the middle, actually gives me less back ache than working on my front engined FTO cos I can get some support under my stomach ;)

Popping up the bonnet (if the boot is full) and putting shopping in, to the disbeliving stares of shoppers on the car park: "He's putting his bags ontop of the engine!"

Wedge profile (now sadly not feasible anymore thanks to pop up light laws) and higher back/low front and general width to length ratio (short and wide).

The lines that go up the bonnet and on the rear deck, adds interest. And how the car should be very squared off but actually has subtle curving in on the glasshouse (viewed from the front).

Most of the other things I love about MY car are from mods (lowered suspension, bushes, modded SC, remote start, remote retract mirrors and remote pop up lights to warn off theives/cats in the night - etc so don't really count but I wouldn't enjoy them so much on any other car).

The majority of people my age (20) seem to drive either a Saxo or an old Fiesta for their 1st car. My 1st car was an 87 MR2 MK1B Tbar in White in absolutely mint condition. A year on and I’ve still got the car and love every single minute of it. It’s cost me a few quid over the past year but that really doesn’t bother me, it’s an absolutely fantastic car! Fun to drive, the girlfriend loves it (even though she calls it a lego car!) and you just don’t see that many about, especially in decent condition.

I love having something in better condition than some two year old cars. And also having a genuine red one not faded to pink. And also all the custom bits I have had to make myself as you cant buy accessories for it.

And again
