What can I expect to get for £2,500?

Post by B1G CJ »

Hi all,

This is my first post, hopefully it won’t be my last.

I’m thinking of buying a mk1 and as the title says I have about £2,500.

I owned a mk1 about 10 years ago and loved it. I’ve since had 2 mk2’s, a g-limited and a turbo, but neither were a fun as the mk1.

I have a wish list (mileage, colour, t-bar) but would really appreciate you options.

So what can I expect to get for around £2,500???

Thanks in advance CJ.

in my opinion, for £2500 you should be looking at pretty mint N/A's. As in, no rust (none!), low mileage, excellent (non blue interior  ) interior, maybe leather.
basically the car should have no issues at all and be all around mint.

For example, when i got my mk1 N/A it was just over 1k, startings of rust around rear arches, but had low mileage, grandad owner for the prev 8 years, excellent engine, etc, and interior (which i have since wrecked due to being pulled out a million times  #-o ) but the only bad thing about mine was the rust, that was all.

so for your kinda money you should expect a minter (in my opinion)

Welcome to the club!

I agree with Guy.

Obviously it depends what you're looking for. A Supercharged Mk1 is more expensive and £2500 will get you something that's not mint.
However, £2500 in N/A land is good money. It should get you a very good Mk1 regardless of whether you're after T-bar or non-T-Bar.

Have a shop around - you'll get a feel for what you should expect from different prices based on what's advertised. For example:
http://www.mr2mk1club.com/forsale.html
There are some nice ones close to the top.

In my opinion, £2500 should get you an N/A with absolutely no rust issues, and very good service history.
I'm probably going to get kicked for this as the Mk1 is undervalued as it is (and even I think that) but there are some sellers asking for much more than their cars are worth - as in there are some cars advertised at prices where the same money with a different seller will get you a car with less miles.

It's a buyers market at the moment, so take your time and shop around. There are a fair few out there... you've just got to be patient to find the right one.

Add your location to your profile as you may be able to get more help locally to you as well.

Good luck!

Well i paid £1700 for mine, and its pretty much mint apart from the arches which will be done next year.

Interior will be mint and a good low mileage engine. Mine had 64k when i bought her.

Hi, Guy, Monkeymax & Mart.

Thanks for the V. rapid posts.

That's what i was hoping to hear. I also think the mk1 is undervalued but that's good for me right.

I have already been to see one that cost over £2K and was a little let down by what I found. The ebay ad looked fantastic under 100k on the clock 1 owner from new and replaced no rust rear aches. the seller forgot to metion the rust on the front arches and claimed he had not notice the fist size patch in font of the divers door. (I don't know if this lin works)

I should have been a bit clearer in my first post I'm not to worried about an SC. and i'd perfer F or G reg.

Thanks again

CJ,
I'm afraid there are plenty of sellers who "haven't noticed" things. It's a great shame as it wastes the buyers (i.e. your) time, irritates you and means that you need to see quite a few sometimes. Patience is the key I'm afraid.
You'll find that you're not the only one to experience this - in fact I saw up to ten that were not as described when I was looking...

You should have a look at the common problems for these cars and do searches on things on here to find out how much it would cost to sort it out. For instance, you could probably get a replacement front wing for, say, £100 from a red one being broken. It's a bolt-on job so easy to sort out. The downside is, if it's rusted on the outside what's it hiding behind?

Rust behind the door where you mentioned is really not good though. Not for that money.

35,000 or 35 miles?

If 35 miles surely a scam, how much did it go for?

Okay,

I think it’s okay to post my wish list now without it being laughed of the page.

MK1 MR2
1990
T-bar
Silver (or red)
Leather
Under 80,000 on the clock
Service history
No Rust

So to much to ask for under £2,500? & can someone tell me if silver was a Toyota production colour as I’ve seen the odd car, but didn’t know if they’d been re-sprayed?

Thanks again

Don't get a red one, you'll be forever keeping it red!

mine had less than 80k on the clock when i bought it so that should be easily achieved on your budget! all of those should be achievable, its all just a question of looking around until you find the right one. there are a lot of dogs out there and if you're paying top doller for one then you want everything you listed!

My 1st MK1 was a bright RED '89 t-bar and i loved it!

I was only 19 and it was the ultimate chick magnet ("sorry love, no room for your friend but hope in").

The only problem was it worked to well. I'm now 32, married to a girl I (the car) pulled, we have a 6 month old baby and i now get to drive an IS lexus with matching baby seat!

No baby onboard sticker.....yet

This looks like a tidy example but the miles and some rust issues might not suit you

Wayne off the forums here is selling his MR2 on Ebay right now:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1988-MK1-TOYOTA-M ... dZViewItem

An excellent price for a rust free low mile example and a trusted guy on the forums here. Ticks all your boxes except T-bar and leather. This car will surely be snapped up soon!

I have found that you can pick up a really low mileage car with around 40,000 on the clock for around £3000. There have been a few on Ebay in last few months and there is one on Autotrader right now and MK1 Club, 39,000, red and perfect black leather, £3200.

Good luck in your search!

Would agree Rich - an absolute bargain, by a first class seller.

Welcome CJ - you should have plenty of choice at £2.5k, personally if you intend to run one for a long time I reckon its best to get the best you can as a decent paint job must be £1500+ these days. Btw if you can stretch further Rich has a rather nice SC in the for sale section - its a tintop, but looks fantastic and totally original :thumleft:

CJ,
For the money you've budgeted you should be able to find the car you're looking for.

However, Mk1bs (the later spec Mk1s - which a 1989/1990 one would certainly be) did not have silver as a standard colour. Think the closest you'll find on a standard Mk1b is the light blue colour...
