[Mk2] [NA] Uneven Inside Tyre Wear - Normal for standard MK2?

Post by MattMR2 »

I've done some searching and found a few posts relating to uneven tyre wear i.e. the insides wearing out long before the rest of the tyre.

Most of the posts seem to relate to modified suspension etc. but I just want to know:

Is it normal for an standard MK2 to wear the insides of the tyres more than the rest?

I've had my MK2 N/A for 10 years now and have always been told by mechanics & tyre fitters that it is normal for front and back to wear the inside out due to the way the car is set to ride.

I replaced my fronts this week (after 4 years) because the insides were bald and the chap at the fitters kept insisting that I needed it all re-aligned due to the uneven wear.
I declined but would like to know if he was right.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

The suspension geometry on my Rev1 was spot on (had it laser checked with all the fancy print outs to prove). In 5 years of ownership, within which I clocked up over 50k miles, I didn't have to replace the front tyres. When I sold the car there was still approx 4mm of tread left right the way across each tyre. Within the same time I went through 4 sets of rear tyres, all worn right the way across.

HTH.

On mine the wear is pretty even. Can confirm this specially for the rear ones because the tire is almost becoming a slick... :P

rev1 N/A here...

i have cusco coilovers and run 2 degrees of negative camber (think standard is nearly 1) when my tyres wear on the inside (after about 12k) i just swap them round to double the wear.

2 degrees of camber is a lot for a road going MR2! Do you use your car on track? Standard is around 1.3 degrees on the rear, give or take.

The standard MR2 still has a tendancy to knock the inners out, although a standard set up shouldn't be getting through tyres very quickly. You really should have your geometry checked as a matter of course every yr or so in any case :)

The answer seems to depend on who you talk to which just goes to show why I am a little confused about it.

On the one hand I'd like even tyre wear as I'd get a bit more use from a set although 4 years is not bad.

On the other hand I don't want to pay for realignment if the car is already set to how it is supposed to be.

:-k

Cheers,

Alignments are very cheap compared to tires on my math... :P

I do it every 10k km (6k miles +-)

Unless you buy a camber adjustment kit camber it is only adjustable via "slop" in the strut bolts, so unless you've bought these then paying for full geometry is a waste of cash.

I'm sorry but that is bull

The standard set up still has the ability to get way out of shape in the geometry department, fact! You should havethe geometry check once every so often, (once a yr or so) as things can be thrown out in my personal experience :(
