[Mk2] [Turbo] world first?? my downpipe SNAPPED IN HALF!!!!

Post by jimGTS »

took the car out today, gave it a bit of beans, then all of a sudden i thought my exhaust had dropped off!!

quickly pulled over, looked at exhaust, fine, looked in the engine bay and found this.........

hard to see in pictures, but basically its completely cut in half!!!!!
and guess what, its a EXTREMEBOOST one, the ones that never crack, lol.
i also had a downpipe bracket on it that i wanted to use to be extra safe!!!!!

i have to say, the car sounds EVIL, lol!! really awsome!! and the pops and bangs are LOUD! quite a power drop, but i want to ask, what are my options??? im worried about it catching fire or something? is that possible on my heat wrap??? can i still use the car??
basically, help, lol!!

At the end of the day Jim, ALL pipes can crack. It really is the luck of the draw. 2 years is pretty good going if this is the first incident.

The lagging on the pipe will have no doubt contributed to it a little, as it will keep the heat that would normally escape into the engine bay, close to the pipe.

Get it welded and enjoy another two years mate.

who was it ages ago when we were having a bit of a discussion on exhausts saying it was only xs stuff that was crap lol

u got a nur spec on??

in my experiences nur spec put a hell of a strain on the DP due to not allways fitting perfect

Got to agree with Earl here.

I have a downpipe that was lagged & it cracked. Now I have the same (welded back up) downpipe lagging removed been fine.

Must have been hotter than hell!

Unlucky Jimbo! Do you use your car everyday to commute? Or is it a toy like mine? You still having probs with the rattley Nur Spec? (before the downpipe snapped obviously)

I replied to your thread on the oc saying about heatwrap- however looking at it again i think the picture tells us a lot. The fact that the lower half has shifted so much to the left(in the picture) surely means it must have been under a lot of stress from the exhaust pulling ? Surely otherwise the bottom half would sag down and away when it snapped due to the weight of the lower half+the front pipe causing the exhaust flexi to bend down that direction?

update folks....

of course i realise these things happen folks, lol, just never ever heard of one of extremeboos/Tims cracking, or exploding like mine!
it is a everyday car

still would like to know peeps opinions on fire? from the pops and bangs when running rich??? i can put up with the noise and less power.......altho im confused to why i have less power with no restriction at all now, lol???

all the heatwrap is off now, as well as the flexying section...

PS, reason for the angle of the lower part of the pipe! is because the downpipe bracket snapped along with the downpipe! the edge snapped off hense why it was hanging there.

more pics...

pps, i actually think the bracket must of snapped ages ago, putting lots of stress on the downpipe, cause with the bracket RoadWarrior, when i lined it up when i was under the car, it fitted perfect, its just sagging and at a funny angle because the bracket snapped along with it, if this hadnt of snapped, i honestly believe the downpipe wouldnt have exploded!

was funny tho, it happened mid tunnel run!!! and to here the car in a tunnel with no exhaust basically, it sounded crazy, lol.

funny you say about the power thing, i was running just on a downpipe once and a nova GTE totally spanked me

i posted it on here and i was told i was speaking b0ll0x

turbo cars do not have the old backpressure thing so like you say it should be the same but no i had no power at all.

also for the record, i had a mongoose on my XS, no problems at all, put a Nur Spec on there and it cracked, same with some of the other lads i know

Has it snapped clean on the weld?

Might also be worthchecking your engine mounts aswell.

Thought you had a rev3 conversion jim, doesnt that mean you need a 4 wire lambda sensor?

No you dont. Of the 4 on the Rev3 2 are for the heater (heated sensor for cold start) and 1 is for the sensor and 1 for its own earth. You can use a resistor on the conversion to fool the ecu into thinking there is a heated plug. Also once you get a Apexi PFC mapped you can do away with the 02 sensor completely.
