[Mk2] [Turbo] Uprated clutch - hating it - want to go back :(

Just got car back after rebuild - running it in now and have an Exedy uprated clutch (have to find out exact spec but it's a pita in 1st and reverse).

Thinking now that I should have left the car at around 320-340bhp and not gone for more

Anyway, anyone else out there that went with an uprated clutch and hated it and had to go back to something smoother ?

I don't know anyone that likes my clutch.

Its stall city with this one. But you have to remember that they're not meant for street use.

I've taken to driving bare foot as I can't feel the pedal through my trainers.

myself and 5 others have driven my car since running this clutch, and only 3 of us managed to move it. The other 3 gave up after a few attempts.

Stick with it, and get used to it. Then give it a few hard launches and you'll remember why you went with it.

I can't remember what he said about the clutch but he did mention some figure in Kg (not lb ft) and may have mentioned capable of 600bhp.

So, if I was happy to have an end goal of say 400-450fwhp, is there a clutch that'll behave nearly like stock ?

Not sure on how to explain this - but I don't mind a heavy clutch but it's the bite on it that's hard to get used to - it seems to be "all on or all off".

Another question - now don't shoot me down ! - anyone ever looked into putting an Auto box onto a big power MR2 turbo ?

I know what you mean. I've had all sorts of issues with mine.

It is possible to slip it, but you do have to be feather light with your clutch foot. Not sure how long you've been driving, but I'm having to disregard 10 years of clutch use - as in just pressing down and lifting back up pretty fast. I'm now having to press down and lift ever so gently and be quite agressive with the gas. This is the main reason I am having difficulty with mine.

Apparently the spec ones have a stock feel, but I've not used any others so couldn't tell for sure.

As for the auto box....

i went for a rps streetmax clutch ,supposed to be up for 450 lb/ft

its single plate like stock ,just a bit stiffer ,not unbearable though .

i have yet to give it any hard launches though

I've got the RPS Street Max 324lbsft one - it's truly awesome. Zero Judder, slightly heavier, perfect.

You can pull up a slight hill on tickover without and problems.

Another reason they're so bad is cos generally they don't have sprung plates. Could you change them?

I'd advise just going out and getting used to it.

i've never had any problems with mine, driven all the RPS Range and all very nice for what they can handle.

Just have to remember that with power comes comprimises unfortunatly. If you want more power you either have to spend alot of money like a twin plate, little noisy but you can get a smooth engagement, or live with a slightly cheaper single and have it heavier than stock.

Its a pain to drive on the street, but it will all seem worth it when I side step it at 5Krpm.

I got given a new "Spec" designed clutch to try out, so far its holding out ok, nice to drive and ment to be good for 600ft/lbs but i'm waiting until the new engine goes in and its had some hard launches before i pass judgement as its had an easy life so far.

yeah so has mine, far too easy. That should be coming to an end soon though, then I will be able to see if all the greif I've had from start to finish with the fitting of this clutch will have been worth it.

I've got a SPEC Stage III in the Beast, rated to 495lb, and to be honest, it behaves perfectly. Just slightly heavier than the stock item, and judders ever so slightly when slipping it, but other than that, it's fine.

...it's had some serious abuse too!

What is the bite like on them? Is the bite point on the floor?

On mine I had to install a pedal stop. Put the carin gear, have someone turn the wheels while depressing the clutch, then when they just release, move the pedal stop to 9mm below the bite point. So its litterally on as soon as you move the pedal.

Should have bought the new OS Giken twin plate. Very nice in all driving conditions and will out last anything mentioned above too

I had an uprated clutch on my first MR2 and now have one one this MR2, I must say I actually prefer them to standard.

what is the level showing on the clutch fluid reservoir, or any sytem leaks ?

lots of reports regarding uprated 3sgte clutch engage probs. quite likely scenario 10+ years after a car left the factory....new uprated clutch & old master/slave cylinders...
