Hi Guys
Im thinking about swapping out the original Toyota unit for a JVC head unit.
Halfords can supply me with an adaptor (PC9-411) but when the sales chap looked at the back of my replacement unit he said that it would still not work as it only had two line outs at the back.
Is this the case or was he just trying to get me to buy a new unit from him.
Appreciate some help from you guys out there.

If it's only got 2 line-outs then it'll probably only drive the front apeakers or the rear speakers. There are JVC ones with 4 line-outs which will fit straight in (mine has from what I can remember) but you'll maybe need to fiddle with the autoleads wiring adapter slightly.

So, not good news then.
Unless I can perform some wiring trickery I will have to raid the piggy bank and buy a new head unit.

When u say use line-out converters are you meaning a single into the back of the head unit which splits into two at thr other end for conecting into the amp (Which means I would ned two of these).

Line-out converters change amplified speaker outputs into low level voltage outputs for the amps. There are 2 amps with the active speaker set-up, one behind each of the seats on the side walls of the car (they're not very big -not much bigger than a pack of cooks matches).
It sticks in my mind that the autoleads active speaker adapter comes complete with a line-out converter (a small PCB which you fit between the head unit and the connector on the car) which gives you 2 x outputs off the same board.
If you have 2 line-outs on your head unit then the autoleads active harness will get you going as that assumes you have none as it has a line-out converter. So you'll need to use the line-out adapter on 2 of the outputs and you can plug in the other 2 line-outs then you'll be OK.
Hate to say it but the guys in Halfrauds will always try and sell you a new unit but trhen they might not be aware of the wiring arrangement. It's easier with 4 x line-outs but it's easy enough to convert I've found.
There is one thing with the active system, if you change head units you need to power the amp. I made up a small board with a relay which is powered off the aerial up function, so when the aerial up signal is given, the amps power up. Otherwise there's no provision for this in the Autoleads wiring as far as I saw.

Personally I would bypass the Stock Toyota amps and run from the headunit - less likely to run into noise issues this way, but you will loose the Sub.
The Stock Toyota amps are no more powerful than those built into a modern headunit. You cannot compare the Toyota amps to an aftermarket amplifier - the power supply arrangement internally is different.

Yea I admit the active system is going to be pants in comparison but it depends I guess on how much work you want to do. Mine goes plenty loud enough to drown out the engine noise but there is plenty of distortion creeping in at the really high levels although fitting a decent head unit helped.
