I think most people with an MR2 have one of these

They can be quite stiff but certainly prevent the engine lid on head Scenario that used to occur

Yup, they are good. As Tim has said, quite a few people have had them fitted and they're easy to fit - and very useful as the standard prop for the engine lid is on the wrong side...
(you open the engine bay on drivers side, then have to clamber around to the other side to set the prop up, then more often than not you have to go back around to the drivers side to do the work that needed doing!)

I've not got one personally, but that's more because I'm tight...

Yup, ive got one on my MK1, had it for about 4 years & wouldnt be without it, in fact i normally end up dropping the lids on cars which are not fitted as i get used to lifting it about 1" then the prop takes over theyre a lot cheaper now than they used to be, in my opinion one of the best bits of aftermarket stuff you can buy . Jinxy

They'd fit on an SC though, wouldn't they? Or are there bits in the way?

You can't have one of these fitted at the same time as a strutbrace though as the bolts that comes up from the shock assembly are not long enough to accommodate both

The twosrus.com engine lid prop fits to a different part of the car Garrick so might be an option. I've got both a strut brace and prop on mine.

$35 plus post is a bit excessive from twosrus as well.

Going to be looking for some for the frunk later on, I think one from a Celica boot would be spot on, 2 would be over kill (bonnet catapult anyone).

always thought these are a big con, I mean nip up the breakers & have a look at various Audi's BMW's even Passat's boots they all have small struts that would probably be fine & cost £1 to buy?

also got one of these on my SC with a cusco strut brace no probs and got one on my NA and wouldnt be without it and cost is high for what it is I guess but cant be ar$ed with messing about so happily pay that to just bolt it up.

Well noticed!! I do prefer the look of the ebay one over twosrus.com's version as its available in stainless steel!! Is it not possible to use longer bolts if you wanted to fit a stut brace as well or is that not possible??

just make a fibreglass engine cover and mount it using bonnet pins, and then remove the entire thing when you are working on the car, much better

making a standard appearance replacement is incredibly easy. just find a large flat piece of sheet metal (smoother the better). lay a standard engine cover on top of it face down, and draw around its outline with permanent marker pen. cover it in release agent then slap on a gel coat slightly larger than the outline and let it cure. then lay down some CSM with polyester resin, 2 or 3 layers will do it, make sure to roll out any air bubbles. let it cure between layers, and once its done just lay the standard bonnet back over it, draw around the outline and carefully trim it to size and then round off the edges so that it looks better.

if you want it to be hinged as well then youll need to figure out how that is going to work. it might be best to put some bolts head down onto the fibreglass after the first layer and then integrate them into fibreglass and give them some supporting layers nearby to hold them there. then these can bolt to an original hinge or another you make out of steel or ally or whatever

the easiest way to fit it is to just fibreglass a catch onto it (so that it can still only be completely removed by pulling the lever in the cabin, this is a security feature) and use 4 bonnet pins to actually hold it down

wont weigh a great deal less than the standard cover, as the standard cover only weighs a few kg to start with. but its still a minor weight saving. you could mount the standard cover with bonnet pins though if easy removal is your main concern

personally im making a fibreglass cover because i also want to incorporate some venting and also some brackets for another item i want to add to the car which isnt there as standard, and its just easier to do it this way than to work in metal
