Mk1b brakes and mk1a wheels.

Post by Karl_T »

Just saw Wheeler Dealers last night (still good for a chuckle  ) and I noticed that the E plate T-Bar they had, had a three spoke Mk1a wheel on the front.

Now I thought all T-bars were b's, it certainly had the right side intake and interior, but I thought you couldn't fit a mk1a wheel over a mk1b front brake. :-k

I'm trying to clear this up as I know someone whose desperately trying to get hold of some teardrop wheels so he can fit mk1b brakes. Does he need to bother?

Icsunonove runs with 1a alloys on his SC, which will of course have the 1b brakes

Is that a good upgrade, mk1a to mk1b spec? I have a full set of mk1b brakes inc. discs and pads plus alloys sat in the garage.
:-k maybe worth sticking on eBay

mk1b, remove dust shields, free off the pistons and sliders, good pagid pads, and you'll be fine on braking on a track, not the feel of a 4-pot, but then what do you expect :)

Unfortunately Pagid no longer make their decent track pads for the MK1 :(

Their bog standard road pads are OK on the road, but that's about it...

oh no!!

I've just fitted a set of RedStuff to our 200sx S13. It has S14 calipers and modified BMW M3 discs, so far they are *awesome* just waiting to see how long they last... they seem to contain some ceramic element aswell? ...or is that just marketing?

Hi
Just wondering what function do the dust shields do? I know their name hints at it, but that cant be the only reason surely? Why arent there dust shields on the outside too? Can I just remove them without consequence?
hmm..
cheers

They duct cool air to the centre of the vented discs. You could try bending them into the air flow a bit more.

HINT: I've removed dust shields eventually on all the cars I've owned, and not one of them has suffered *more* fade and overheating due to their removal.

Helps cooling when the car is stationary and moving slowly. High speed cooling is debateable at best.

It's much easier to access the lower MacPherson strut bolts with the dust shield removed... :thumleft:

Hmm must admit i've ended up removing them on all my MK1s. It is easier for access without them in the way. Mind you they were taken off my first MR2 and i carried them over to my next MR2. My last one was an A, so when i put the B brakes on i had to remove the dustshield.

I really fancied trying out bending the existing ducts to see if there is any improvement. Incidentally this is what they did on the RX8 i raced. It seemed to work reasonably well though they did change the pads as well IIRC.

My track car still has the shield which I have bent to aid airflow.

I have also used some ducting from the front of the car to the inside of the brake callipers to aid with cooling.

MartG has done similar although on mine, I have the ducting slightly closer to the callipers:

Well the passenger side is dust cover is off.
From the design I cant see how it aids airflow at all. In fact unless bits have fallen off due to rust, it virtually stops any airflow on the inboard side.
The only purpose i can see it serves is to protect the bearing seal and so the bearing from crud, dirt and dust. The shield has a lip around the inner diameter to attempt to direct this muck away. I have seen other shields without this lip however but IMHO this is what they are for.
Anyway they are going, if only to loose a horrid tatty rusty piece of pressing from the car lol

The part that channels air into the cover is usually the first bit that rusts away so might not be so obvious.

Pic below shows the channel with an arrow pointing at it.
