My new '' 9 ''man tent arrived today, bought it from Ebay for £40 brand new. I've priced the same up in the shop, £250..!!!
Always a laugh watching people put new tents up in the sun for the 1st time. So by now you shoud have ticked all the following:

Have pre-purchased a circuit parking ticket for race weekend.

Have organised MR2 insurance and European breakdown cover.

Have all the necessary car safety items required by French law, 1st aid kit, spare bulb kit, GB sticker, warning triangle.

Checked spare tyre or carry a can of tyre weld.

MR2 serviced, coolant change, and tuned.

Checked tent and bought spare/new tent pegs ( bring rubber mallet )

Checked airbed for holes.

Ordered Euros, probably £200 would be enough to travel with.

Printed confirmation of hotel, chateau and ferry booking.

If I think of anything else I'll add it.

£40 for a 9 man tent is bloody good :thumleft: I thought our 6 man was going to big a big effort  You didn't happen to buy off a company on ebay called "Tentastic" They have some right bargains on there.

Well looking forward to this now, Just got to put some new tyres on the rears, get some euros and were away :D

Do we need AA breakdown cover and spare water pumps?

Just wondering... Do foreign cash points charge a huge amount to take euros out? Is it best to take the full amount in euros now?

Also, does anywhere sell a spare bulb kit for the mk1? or do I just put a couple of headlamp bulbs in?

Cheers,

Pete

Pete

Answers to your questions No need for AA breakdown cover but you do need to have some breakdown cover. Think it is compulsary over there. You may already have with your insurance. If not AA may be best option

As for water pump i think it would be very unlucky if more than one of us have that problem so if michael is taking one he may be willing to share. :D

Bulb kits - Best thing to do is get on ebay. You can buy bulb kit in a box for about £3.50 posted to you. Remember the light deflectors and warning triangle to.Also need first aid kit and reflective jacket. :thumleft:

Money
Your bank cards should be able to work in France at cash points but some banks do make charges som up to 4%. :pale:

The nation wide make no charges on cash withdrawls or using there credit cards.

Best check with the bank and credit card people you have any they will keep you right.

Pete,

You definately need breakdown cover in France, I broke down 2 years ago on the 4 lane French A1, not a nice experience, alternator bracket bolt snapped, AA sorted me out within 2 hours I was back on the road. I'm taking a brand new alternator and water pump for anyone to use in case the worst happens, piece of mind really but you never know, I wouldn't like to think how long it would take Toyota France to get one to you.

DON'T take all cash with you, the cashpoints are fine, theres one in the local villiage and I don't think it charges that much. You can also pay the chateau, petrol, supermarket, etc with your card.

Please PM me and I'll give you my number. I'll have the route posted in the next few days. Some are going via Rouen and some are taking a more scenic route down the coast.

Cheers

Update

The chateau will be putting on its very own car show on the Friday night along with a buffet and drinks from the bar, although you can bring across your own beer. If you want to you can enter your own car into the Concourse de Elegance and get to drive the red carpet infrom of 200 people. Gordon and Alison Moffett did it last year so ask them about it when you see them.

We also plan to have a party meal in the restaurant at the chateau after the race, normally we are all knackered and can't be bothered to cook so we get someone else to do it for us. If you would like to attend come and see me before the race weekend as we will need to book numbers.

By the way there are some cheap grandstand tickets going fairley cheap on Ebay. Theres 2 x tickets for the grandstand at tet rouge which is a great part of the circuit going for about £100, snip!!

Not long now guys ( and lasses )

Michael

Not long now.

Just to confirm the official ferry is leaving Dover @ 07.00am on Tuesday 12th June and it takes 50 minutes to get to the port of Boulogne, therefore we will arrive in France @ 08.50am French time. If you are now on our ferry and want to meet us once in France we will need to arrange this, remember I've never beento the port of Boulogne so we will need to meet further down the road, probably on the A16 somewhere. Ring me to arrange before we set off on Monday 11th.

Trying to do the route but Google Map's down at the moment.

Cheers

Here we go as requested, maps of the area around the port of Dover Speedferries.

Image

The M20/A20 takes you straight to the Hoverport without passing through the city of Dover and as SpeedFerries is the sole operator out of Dover’s Hoverport there is no heavy traffic congesting this area. Check-in, shopping and catering facilities are exclusive to SpeedFerries customers in both Dover and Boulogne.

Image

SpeedFerries location is ideal both for travellers passing through on the way to their final destination as well as for travellers wanting to spend some time in the charming old town of Boulogne.
The port offers free car parking and is linked directly to the town centre by a pedestrian walkway.
In addition, the new auto route link road from the Port of Boulogne takes you directly onto the main A16 and entire French motorway network.

CAN I SUGGEST ONCE WE ROLL OFF THE FERRY WE ALL MEET UP IN THE CARPARK AT BOULOGNE AS MENTIONED ABOVE

Hello,

Steph and I have been a bit slack and left stuff til the last minute. Shocker 8-[

Now I realise we have to leave at 4am to be at Dover for a 7am sailing. OMG.

AA have just quoted me £65 for breakdown cover, and I still have to buy bulbs, jacket, warning triangle, headlight stickers, etc..... But, hey, I have lots of money in euros, AND my exquisite schoolboy French to get us by.
Plus, I might just be able to borrow a storm kettle for the making of tea (a shallow bid for popularity).

Thanks to people who have shared their "to-do" lists, but please tell me we aren't the only slackers out there..?

I think most of these might have been mentioned, but just in case:
First aid kit
Warning triangle
Spare bulbs
Fire extinguisher
Reflective jackets - for each person in the car
Documents - Drivers licence, Insurance etc

Withdrawals from cashpoints normally cost between 75p-£1.50 & translation from euros to pounds at the going exchange rate - withdraw largish amounts infrequently.

Useful terms:
Tyre - pneu (silent p)
Clutch / brake fluid - liquide pour l'embrayage / frein
Water - l'eau
Petrol - l'essence
Lead free - sans plomb
Beer - biere
More beer - encore biere
MR2 - don't even try. It's rude!

Don't forget the water pistols - de rigeur on Mad Friday.
I've got one with optional slime!

Last year, the RAC gave me discount for being a member of the MR2 Mk1 Club.
They won't ask, so mention it.

This time next week, we will be there! Hurrah!

As frogge mentioned above the water pistol fight is definately going to happen on MAD FRIDAY, you certainly will need it to wet all those people in convertibles at the circuit!! You can buy them from Leclerc's supermarket over there for about £5 - £10, not sure if the ''slime option'' wil be available.
Image
Mad going-ons on the Mulsanne Straight on Mad Friday. The Darlek is actually a water container for the pistols!!

I'll try and source together pictures of people who will be attending this year so we can put names to faces.

Hi Dave,

Tell me about it, I plan to leave home about 02:00  on tuesday morning to get down to the ferry port in time ! (anyone else driving down the M1 wanna meet up so I dont feel so lonely

I got some headlight benders and a GB sticker for £9.99 from halfords they also do a bulb kit, I cant remember the price but I think thats about the same.

Not really a slacker :^o but I have only just sorted stuff like this out in the last two days, I still need to check my tents ok and not rotted to pieces up in the damp shed, change the dizzy cap, clean my airfilter, change the brakefluid and get the tracking checked before I am ready to go

Frogge,
Do we really need a fire extinguisher for the car ?

Spittinflames
I got my cash changed at the post office

Whilst I am on and posting,

Whats the deal with petrol prices in France ? Is it cheaper than in England?

I was just wondering if it was worth filling up before we leave blighty or wait till we get to france and then fill up before the journey to Le Mans??

PaulM
