1/4 mile to stop. Thatss longer than i thought! Plus its not gonna be a comfortable stop hitting all those cars on the way! Thats assuming a 2 can brake as quickly as a bike???

I think thats way beyond the limits of what you should be doing on a public road [-( Just think what could have happened if something had gone wrong (blow out, emergency stop, some guy pulling out infront of you, a cat in the middle of the road) [-X

Whereas getting caught at 90mph you could possibly get away with some points and a fine...159mph is a pure prison sentence on wheels.

we all race/speed

And some of us have the common sense to only drive fast on the track.

Just out of interest then - whats a tubby geared for? can you even do 159mph?

senie wrote:we all race/speed, whatever you wnat to call it, but 159mph is absolutley ludicrous.

Do you actually know how long it takes to stop from that speed with your brakes? If you hit a camber in the road at that speed, your up a creek without a paddle, as is everyone else around (if applicabel). This (to agree with lauren for once! :) ) is why a track is so much better as it is generally flat. motorways arent.

Speak for yourself! We don't all do this. I never race on the road. Though i may have exceeded the speed limit on occasion i don't go to these extremes. I've never been over 100mph in my MK1.

Tracks aren't necessarily flat btw. Some are like boringstone and Snett, but Cadwell, Angersea, Oulton, Brands, Mallory, Knockhill aren't.

But yes you are right 159mph is ridiculous.

I think the key thing here is that it's an 'indicated' 159 which is more than likely going to be in the 130's given how crap the MR2 speedo is at higher speeds, the AVCR just takes the reading from the same input the speedo uses.

Unless it's recorded with GPS I'm assuming the speed was considerably lower but still absolutely stupid on a public road, especially if racing - the poster remarks that the road was clear... what about the DB7?

I'm definately no saint when it comes to speeding but if I was to do daft speeds like this chap I certainly wouldn't come onto a forum to brag about it.

Im sure most people have sped on the open road on a couple of occasions. My point was this:

we all do it with a few exceptions, or those not willing to admit to it, but those kind of speeds are silly on a road. If you look back over the whole thread you will see that i have been strongly against this post from the start.

sorry mate, that is pretty stupid!

but im still coming to terms with the fact that an NA went 159mph! didnt think it could reach this!
and bu88er ME! SURELY AN NA CANT KEEP WITH A DB7!! Hell no way!
anything over 1st and 2nd gear, and the DB7 would eat a standard tubby! it would be close yeh, but no way can he of been trying, christ, you only got an NA!
(ps, not dissing NAs)/

EDIT, yep, sorry, just realised you got a tubby!
but still, same applies really!

Sorry mate, but that speed is madness.

fact is the Aston could sit happily at 159, and he could jump on his brakes and stop far quicker than you.

It all well and good having the acceleration that can match him, but all that extra cash he's spent on the Aston doesn't just go on wheels and leather interior.

Ah - no, I didn't say I've never done above 70mph... I used to have a nice 4.2 litre Jaguar that would cruise quite nicely at a surprisingly high speed, but can honestly say that I haven't exceeded the speed limit in the past few years.
I confess that I used to drive like a total hand jockey when I was about 17/18 - maximum RPM in as many gears as I could, handbrake turns, etc, etc, but nowadays don't feel the need to prove my driving abilities or vehicle abilities to myself and/or anyone else on the road.

You only need to go over 5mph the speed limit and your exceeding it
just ask those people that got fines for doing exactly that

Actually - you only need to be doing the speed limit, and you're over it... +/- 10% for those of us with the correct rolling radius.. who knows how fast your going with different wheel/tyre combinations.

Considering most speedometers over-read, if you're nicked for doing 80mph by a speed gun/camera, your speedo is probably reading something like 87mph, so get everything you deserve.
My Honda reads 10% over, so when I hit the motorway, I sit at 77mph on the clock and hit the cruise control button. Voila! A perfect 70mph all the way!

If you've got different wheel and tyre sizes compared to the standard setup, it's worth getting the speedo calibrated or at least know how inaccurate your speedo is.

Slight spin on the story here, but slow drivers are also dangerous, i think the key is a happy medium, someone doodling along in the middle lane at 40mph is just as dangerous to other motorists as somone in the fast lane doing 85mph, but you never see them getting pulled. You want to use the motorway you should have to be able to drive at least 60.
