[Mk2] [NA] Lowered suspension. NOW LOWERED! WITH PHOTOS!

Post by Peter C »

1996 Rev3 NA UK car with 17s, 205/40/17s all round for the time being, will stick bigger rubber on the back once these wear out.

Quite clearly the car needs lowering. How far do I go? I think 40mm is about right.

What springs should I go for and where is the best place to buy them if I want them asap.

Do I need any special tools (aside from a pair of coil spring compressors) to change the springs myself?

Please help!

if you have 2 people you dont even need spring compressors!

a 17 ratchet and spanner a 14 ratchet and a 19 ratchet will do!

or you could buy coilovers and jusat keep on lowering it till the floor pan of the car hits the deck! not a good idea really.........

That's great news. I already have a set of coil spring compressors but I'm glad I don't need much else. I presume it's a fairly easy job?

I've been looking around and a -40mm drop is pretty much the max unless I go for a coilover kit.

i used to have 40mm on mine (before i put coilovers on!) and although i have a fair amount of mechanical experiance i would say an amputee could do it!

just remember to undo the centre nut for the struts a little while they are still on the car it makes the whole affair so much easier!

infact i live just down in berko i could come give you a hand if you want?

Good advice, The only other thing that gives you trouble is removing the droplinks..... sometimes getting a new set and angle grinding them off is easier

Craig (redmr2) Has a 60mm drop on springs (not coilovers) maybe take a look at his car.

Oh and the Tein springs are rated highly... Give a nice drop too :thumleft:

i didnt bother emoving the droplinks!

if you undo the two bolts at the bottom of the strut and the top four bolts you can swing the strut down and youve got enough room to stick different springs on without having to take them off!

I've been looking at G-Max -40mm springs. Any good?

I had a look on EBay and the only ones I found are these:

Unfortunately they are for a Rev1/2 so no good to me.

Looks like I'm going to order from these guys:

Actually its funny you should say that, as when i was doing a mates mr2 we couldnt get some of the droplinks off so did exactly that, I wouldnt really recommend it though as you can bend the droplinks if your not carefull. It is do-able though :thumleft:

Oops, just noticed that! Thanks mate, but my brother in law is a mechanic and he loves getting his hands dirty so I'm going to get him to put the springs on for me.

We should meet up soon though! When's the next Jap night at the Ace Cafe? Fancy it?

Remember that most springs that claim to drop 40mm dont! Theres loads of people who fit the springs and dont notice any drop. The only springs ive seen give a noticeable drop are Tein springs. Check them out on Rogues site. There is a before and after photo showing how much they drop.

also the majority of springs need a few days to settle down into proper compression too so it isnt always obvious when you put them on!

Right, that's all sorted. There's a set of Tein springs on their way from Rogue Motorsport!

Rowan, let me know when you're ready and we'll meet up at the Ace!

Looking good! Just need some fatter tyres on the back.
