You would get a serious slap on the wrist if you got caught, no tax, no UK mot and possibly no insurace but hey life is all about taking risks, and you could always plead ignorance :D Just checked and it has no plates so I wouldnt recommend driving it without first getting it registered as the odds of getting pulled are much higher when driving without numberplates. :(

i would be very carefull as you have no traceable history.
anyway you could always buy some show plates with a ficticious number which you would never use on the road and would never be the same number as the car up the road that just happened to be the same make and colour. you would be all right with it parked in your drive then as it would look normal. [-X

MOT, £38 registration fee, and 6/12 months tax depending on what you want.

All provided that the owner has all the offical documents to register it. Which looking at this I would seriously doubt.

I have a friend who buys fresh jap imports all the time, and he assures me - you can legally drive the car (has to be insured though) but strictly only home from the port. I dont know the 'ins and outs' of it all, but as far as I knew you can drive a fresh import straight home - legally. (Temporary registration) might be worth looking up?

If anyone wants me to pop by and have a look for them for anything obvious that's up with it, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do, it's a few roads along from me by the looks of it. I'm not an AA mechanic or anything, but i am fussy and very picky

oh, by the way..

as for driving it back, if it's registerd abroad, you can drive it here for 6 months as a "guest" sort of thing, then it must either go home or be registered here. so, all you need to do is make sure you have a licence, insurance, and a little speach about how you bought it and just drove it back or something and the feds would be happy.

Dont forget to factor in the train ride down south, KFC and fuel costs back up north !!!

:D

Must be a good 6 hours on a train and the same again if your gonna risk driving it back.....i think if you get caught with false plates you'll get clobbered badley!

Best check if you can get temp plates, but i thought that it was only for cars that havent been in the uk...and you have to prove you have driven the car from the county its registered in.... failing that, hire a trailer....

i know the AA wont give you a "lift" if it hasnt got tax or anything...been there and tried that one !
We ALL make mistakes !!! :)

Oh for god sake, read the post properly..... Of course you have your own official documents, but there not going to get someone very far in the UK now are they, im talking about de-registration documents or proof of export documents, then factor into that HM customs payment aswell (roughly 10% of the cost of the car, then VAT @ 17.5% ontop of that), so then and only then can the car be registered in the UK.

Seeing though the car is now located in the UK have you already payed the customs on it when you brought it over?

It's like if I were to sell one of my japanese imports to a customer with no de-reg or proof of customs payment, they would be screwed for getting it registered and at best could only be sold for spares.

  So basically before registering the car here in the UK, VAT and HM Customs will want 27.5% first...  Rip off Britain, yet again?
cyeats

yes

Post by cyeats »

no de-reg proof required as gibraltar is a british colony and part of the EU, so the car hasnt been exported from Japan :)
