Old School Wheels....

Post by jrleech »

All this talk recently of old school wheels has got me thinking about replacing my (now sold) OZ Superleggera's with something more befitting of the era of the car.

A browse through Image Wheels's catalogue and I've got a shortlist (bear in mind that some of the pics will be of 17"/18" rims, some with insane offsets giving a HUGE dish - I'll be going for 15's close to stock offsets etc.).

Billet centres:

These are handed to vent the brakes claiming a 25% increase in brake cooling:

Cast centres:

I'm swaying towards top middle and the blue ones (not in blue though), though might need to see them in a 15" size to decide. Like them all though :)

What do you guys/gals think will suit the car best?

If I was to decide on ones to go on my Helios, I would be happy with any of those down the left hand column. Probably the bottom one is my favourite, all very cool though :thumleft:

Yep, all current lines: http://www.imagewheels.co.uk

Not cheap though, and Image Wheels have to be lovingly cared for or they get tatty rather quickly - Aluminium doesn't like UK weather!

Fortunately my car will never again endure the winter (nor has it for the last 8 years :D ).... doubt it'll get wet again either!

You do get to spec the rim size, width, offset... they're made to order.

Blue ones are my fave, but thats with my sierra in mind.

Red ones and top ones could work on a MR2, but YO! just checked the price! #-o

Yep, seen Jinxy's ones, look very smart:

If they were cheap, everyone would have them ;)

Yep, would be interesting to see the blue ones in the correct size...

[edit] Just checked again and the blue ones pictured are 13" rims! I reckon in a 15" rim, with a much smaller offset/dish, they might look quite similar to the pepperpots..... Now top of my list :)

I have now :)

I prefer the Image ones though, and I can pick them up from the factory and take them back WHEN they start to leak

Not a fan tbh - I kind of like the tanabe wheels which are period.

(yes I know they are 16s with the wrong PCD, picture is for illustrative reasons only :) )

Not that keen on the Mini look ;)

To be honest, I've not seen anything yet that I prefer more than the Superleggera's. I was going to go for Ultraleggera's, but they look too 'cut' and new.

LOL... For a Mk2 yes, for a Mk1 not for me (and even then I don't like 6 spokes, needs to be 5).

Like the new Mk3... staying standard?

Would love to try and get a set of TSW evo's from the early 90's. Very flat 7 spoke design, think it'd suit the Mk1 nicely.

I saw tsw evos on a car years ago, looked very very cool, very flat and flush with the slab sides of the car.

I've got a set of old school 'Hartge Japan' wheels to put on my 1.5, they are 15". I have had the shot blasted, I just need to smooth out some minor inperfections, then get them powder coated, then buy some tyres.
I've got some screaming chicken centre caps to go on as well...
Has anyone heard of Hartge Japan?

Looks like the Superleggera is well and truely gone :(. Discontinued for the Ultra and none left, so there goes that plan.

How about Gram Lights - 57Pro 15" :

Stick with a silver rim, or do you think gold/bronze would suit a Helios Blue?
