just had one of these beauties follow me up a local private runway,
and i must say i didnt give it much thought as i assumed it was a corolla t-sport or similar til it came past flat to floor in 3rd while i was swapping cogs desperately trying to keep up! on boost 2nd time when i was ready it didnt seem that quick 2nd to 4th but if you arent on boost that 3rd gear in them goes on forever and they are mighty quick. never seen one on roads before but what a lovely car and engine note! shame that driver assumed he'd come past me no prob..

Quick little cars but they really have to be worked hard as they're only 1.6 with mad revs...... he just caught you off guard

to be fair i did let him but i thought when i came on boost in 3rd i would go past but that thing kept on revving!! ha ha. It always surprises me though what cars will stay with you on in gear acceleration. standing start maybe a different matter..

I always found with my Hondas (Civic/Accord Type R/S2000) the fact they revved so long always helped when overtaking as you could pass without changing up

They only weigh about 1000kg as well so it's a healthy bhp/ton of 180

I kneeeeeew this would get posted, I’ve just searched for “EK9” on every MR2 owners forum I could find. It was me mate, it is indeed an EK9, a 2000 (W plate) Civic Type-Rx.

I have to say that you’ve got me wrong about going past you and thinking it was all too easy. I knew you’d either fluffed a gear change or you just weren’t biting. I’m well aware of what an MR2 Turbo is capable of, which you demonstrated to me on the next stretch. You slowed right down, let me go by and then must have come on boost and went for it? You were flying

Much to my annoyance I actually dropped out of VTEC when going from 2nd to 3rd, which as you may be aware will punish you, they aren’t quite as easy to ‘drive fast’ as the newer Civic Type R’s with the fancy gearbox and more torque, if you drop out of VTEC in an EK9 you won’t get anywhere, as kmb says you have to rev the boobs off them.

They aren’t the fastest cars on the road but Christ; they’re so much fun to drive and more importantly, unique. AFAIK there are less than 50 in the UK, which may explain you not ever seeing one before.

It obviously made you take notice though to do a little research afterwards?

Wonderful car.

My best mate has a mint black example, and it goes like sh*t off a shovel!

He also has a rather stock looking ITR B18 powered CRX, which shocks a few people.

Not cheap at all, EK9's. But aslong as they're priced OTT they'll stay rare fingers crossed!!

.. and regarding the engine note, mine's pretty tame compared to what they sound like with a Mugen airbox and Mugen twinloop back-box

Is yours pretty much a factory fresh example then? I dont suppose theres much to be gained by fiddling around under the bonnet as theyre so well tuned as standard?

Fully standard under the bonnet, only modification is the RS*R exhaust, which is fitted with a silencer untill I get a Mugen twinloop. Spoon drop-in air filter on order also.

Has Teg DC2 wheels (heavier than EK9 wheels) too, can be seen if you click the car under my name.

But you are correct, they don't react well to engine mods. And anyone that sticks a turbo on a Type R needs shooting

I used to have an EP3, fun on VTEC but the mr2 would toast it in a straight line.

Very capable B road machines though!

The amount of power honda got out of that little b16b is insane! I mean 116 bhp / litre is pretty much the same as my rev3 tubby! Nice looking cars as well, but very pricey! I heard the engine is a de-stroked teg-r?
