3SGTE help!!!!

Post by n.dot »

Can I buy a 3SGTE from a Celica and use it for the MK1.5 conversion?

It looks like the same engine to me??? Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

I believe so, however you'll still need to source the gearbox and I imagine the loom will need some fettling to fit the Mk1. :-k

Problem with the 3-SGTE from the celica is that it is fat!!

There are subtle differences

The alternator is in a different place, and all the pipe work. However. Thje TMIC should fit in nicely

Worth popping over to the twobrutal forum, which would have all the info required :)

Apart from some very subtle differences they are the same, like Mikey said the biggest is the alternator and obviously the gearbox is no use, FYI the MR2 Rev 1 and 2 engine (I think) is the st185 celica, the Rev 3+ engine is the st205, if you can get an st205wrc engine it will have the anti lag etc on there too.

Common mistake the anti lag. Yes it is on their due to the homlogation rules. However, its not actually activated, is very exspensive to activate, and i dont actually know anyone form the GT4 club who activated it, as they are renowned for stripping years from your engine :o(

You'd know more about it than me skin, been a techno boff, but I agree ST20 "faff" engine is the way forward. Especially with that chargecooler hhhmmmmmm nice

yeah, I have a friend with an st205 wrc, the anti lag is there but not plumbed in, so is a pre-rad water spray thats connected to the washer bottles so if you connected it up you could cool your pre-rad with the washer fluid, the cheeky little toyota engineers!!!!

They are reknowned for cheating though, remember the variable inlet from the Corolla?!?

The jets on the water spray are rubbish, though, more like a sprinkler than a mister, and acts to insulate the pre-rad rather than help cool it. Once again a homogolation jobbie. Neither the anti-lag or water spray were illegal in WRC (obviously), though the adapted turbo restrictor certainly was

BTW, The Celica alternator position is a common modification made to the 3SGTE when installed in the AW11, so don't be put off by it - it just so happens that uk conversion #3 ran that way as well :)

You will need to source a MR2 gearbox though, as the linkages on the top of the gearbox work the opposite way around (they can be changed, but it requires some machining ISTR).

As Megatron mentioned, the Celica alternator position is the best way to go - in fact, I think to use the std MR2 alt mount requires lots of fabbing & messing around... so that's a bonus!!
