[Mk2] [Turbo] At last, an MR2 on the driveway!

Post by Flam3h »

Well, we started looking in January and at long last finally found one which ticked all the boxes.

GT, Black (or blue), T-bar, low mileage, mint condition both mechanically and aesthetically.

And we found this..

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/158768.htm

TBH, I didn't know what to expect (nervous) before going to Bicester today, but all I can say is wow!.

The car was in extremely good condition, I recently sold a 2004 Civic Type-R and I probably wouldn't be lying when I said the MR2 is in better condition! (mind you the paint on Hondas is terrible  ).

After pleasantly being suprised by the condition of it, I was anxious to have a drive :thumleft: . Well, all I can say is - I'm never driving a Type-R again 8) . Everything felt so tight and new, the steering was great, the boost had pretty much no lag (to my amazement!) - the supposedly hard ride on coilovers was amazingly forgiving!.

I am bemused by the car as you can imagine  .

Anyway, after swiftly handing over the money and sorting the paperwork etc. We went on another tour to 3S Services to see James (a very nice chap!).

James gave it a good eye over checking the mechanics / bodywork etc and took it for a spin down the locally carriageway. The impression I got is that he was suprised how together the car was, not only on the outside but mechanically aswell. He even said without even looking at the turbo, I can tell you it is in great condition! (praise the lord), he also found no evidence of previous mods etc, which he said was great.

Well after a bit of chat etc. We booked it in for a service / cambelt and a couple of minor things (inc turbo timer fitting) to be sorted in a couple of weeks time. James was most helpful and great at explaining things in english that would otherwise be :-s .

I might aswell mention that Luke at Sky insurance was an absolute pleasure to deal with aswell, I promptly told him all of the mods I could find and there was no extra cost  . (premium was £890 for 24yr/old 0 nc bonus). I'm certainly going to write some kind of email / mail to Sky and tell them about how nice it was dealing with Luke.

We ended up paying £5400 for the car, which to some might seem a little steep - but to me, it was an absolute bargain :thumleft: .

So, for my first half day of owning an MR2, all I can say is - anyone thinking of getting one, don't hang around! BUY!. Ours is a suprisingly very smooth drive which is just a joy even if the thing is 13 years old  .

I'll get some pictures up etc at some point, still deciding whether to rid of the wheels (maybe some black 17's with chrome rim).

Thanks for reading.

Those are the same wheels as I have on mine - I'm getting mine sprayed white next week! I have no centre caps though and theyre a little scuffed, so theyre getting refurbished before spraying. I have also got myself another airwalker bumper to replace the cracked one I currently have.

Mine was 4500, with 40 odd thousand miles on her (First UK owner)

Basically, I've bought the MR2, paid another £10k off my mortgage and had only done 700 miles in the S2000 since xmas..... I've always liked the shape and thought I should get my first RWD petrol turbo :D 8)

The S2000 was too expensive to be sitting in my garage as a weekend toy... The MR2 will be perfect, the only other cheap choice was S14a and I noticed the type of people driving them  :thumleft:

Thanks, I was a quiet member on Civic Type-R owners club before :D. Had a full spoon system on it and a few other mods. We were going to buy an S2000 whilst in limbo land over the Civic, test drove one in London - you won't be disappointed with the MR2 put it that way  .

Cracking looking car there Mark, just went and checked the wheels for the centre caps and they are all there \:D/ .

Just trying to find any excuse to go out for a spin O:)

Its great to see there are people still willing to put money into a nice 2, there are far too many young men buying tat and having to spend small fortunes putting it right.

Well done that man, great purchase, and well done to NVI another minter

Cheers James,

Looks like I've found the right garage to help keep her in the condition she deserves to be in! .

After looking for a while for an MR2, it became apparent that it was going to be worth spending more money from the start!.

Whilst looking, there were far too many uncared for 2's out there and we could have easily purchased one for a lot less money (and probably not known any different; thinking that is what to be expected for the age!). Luckily BenF's FAQ helped us loads (found here http://www.btinternet.com/~netsurf/mr2t/mr2tfaq.html) and helped someone without a blinding clue regarding MR2's get some good base info  .

I want everything spot on from the start and to ultimately keep it that way, it would be a crime to let another MR2 go to waste due to negligence :thumleft:

Prevention is better than cure

The more I look at the car, the more I regret ever buying a Honda (damn you hindsight) . What a beautiful piece of engineering!, my (clueless) friend was gobsmacked when I said it was 13 years old.

I loved my Civic and Accord Type-R's the S2000 was brilliant.......... I unfortunately think the Honda range is going downhill since the failure to import the DC5 or Euro-R, and the new Civic is rather disappointing :(

Time to try an old Toyota :)
