Increase boost pressure

Post by D J Beavan »

I've got a standard 1994 tubby, been looking @ HKS turbo timers that also increase the boost pressure.

Are these any good?
How much addiitonal power do you get?
Are they easy to fit?

Any help would be great.

I don't know of any HKS turbo timer that also controls boost. Have a Type-1 HKS turbo timer myself, and it doesn't even monitor boost, let alone control it.

Personally I wouldnt bother with the turbo timer. If you patient enought you can just sit in your car for a couple of mins and wait (if you have been thrashing it). You can increas your boost cheaply with a FCD and grainger valve. You would also need an aftermarket boost gauge. Try a search on this forum. By the way increasing your boost will put a big smile on your face!! :P

don't know of any that also increase boost pressure, but i had a razo turbo timer on my car that i thought was great. it would calculate how long it thought the engine needed to run for to cool down the turbo dependant on usage. you can sit in the car for a few minutes whilst the turbo cools, but are you going to do that all the time? i liked the fact i could lock the car and walk away leaving it running.

Ive got a turbo timer that is part of my remote start alarm system. That way my car is secure even when the engine is running down. Would a normal turbo timer kill the engine if someone broke into your car or would a theif get a few miles down the road?

Most turbo timer's are wired into the handbrake so when you release it kill's the engine.
My Blitz t/timer monitors boost/peak boost etc.
But i dont know of any that control boost :-k

Regarding the turbo timer.....As mentioned they are not a must. If you simply drive off boost for the last 2-3 minutes before shutting your engine off or as also mentioned allow the car to idle for the same amount of time at the end of a journey your turbo will live a long happy life :D

As for turning up the boost.....I've had a look at your profile and I can see no mention of basic engne mods such as exhaust, filter etc. If you don't already have the mentioned items then I would personally suggest starting here before you consider turning up the boost. A free flowing system will give you a sizeable increase in power along with a passive boost increase, possibly as much as 20bhp should you also add a decat pipe to the list. At this stage you could see around 265bhp from a healthy Rev3+ 8)

As for the suggested FCD, (fuel cut defender) their really is no need on the Rev3+ cars. This is due to the factory boost levels (13psi/0.9 bar) being higher than that of the earlier Rev 1-2 cars (10-11psi/0.5-0.6 bar)

Once you have the breathing sorted you can as suggested increase boost. However I would'nt suggest any more than 1.1 bar whilst the standed intercooler (i/c) is still in place. The standed i/c really is dreadfull when pushed so addressing this problem should be next on your list. This can be done either with an uprated i/c with the Greddy and Spearco both having proved themselves, or by fitting a chargecooler, my own personal choice. At this stage their are many other things that should be considered but lets chat more about those once you get a closer
