The height of the engine basically.

Say 3 feet-ish from the floor to the bottom of the chassis where the rear gearbox mount goes, it will seem pretty high. I've always dropped the engine and box with a crane then used the crane to lift up the rear of the car. If you get it high enough you can slide it out on the gearbox side. Otherwise you'll need to prop the car up very high on axle stands so you can remove the crane and pull the engine and box out the rear.

Ahhh

3 feet! that is pretty high. What about the front bumper? Will I have to jack up the front to get clearance? I do have an engine hoist but not too sure if it has the travel to lift 3ft...maybe if I can get a low enough lift point. Where do you lift from?

I didnt have to touch the front end, it was fine.Put the car on axle stands, lower the engine to the floor with a crane, and then jack the car up til it clears the engine.

i split the block, head and gearbox in the car. that way i only needed to get the car about 1.5 feet of the floor to get everything out. it's a bit more time consuming but i didn't have the facilities to get the car three feet in the air!

I couldnt be bothed to do this bit myself (plus dont have much space in the garage) so took it to a local garage and the took it out and stuck it on my engine stand then brought it to my house in their van.

cost about £250 but well worth not having the hassle of doing it myself.

Its not that hard really. Mark and I can drop a MK1 engine and box in 4 hours no problem.

how did it go, any follow up to this?

Are their any worthwhile shortcuts if i'm just stripping a scrap car for the engine/parts?

with the engine dropped, how heavy is the back end? could 2/3 guys lift the rear over the engine?

should i just angle grind off the back end (this destructive approach has a strange appeal!)

also does anyone have experience of a stripped car being picked up by scrappies? Are they ok with shells ie not rolling?

I had a 92 bmw M5 , stripped that totally, doors panels, wheels, suspension all lectrics etc, evrything.. was just a shell some dmaged panels and a few odd bits. phoned a local breakers and they picked it up no worries and best of all was totally free :D ! Of course, i can't comment on all scrappies but ive delt with two difeerent ones and so far theyve been ok.
hope this helps
