Seems fairly reasonable to me. A set of Yellow bilsteins (the standard replacement shocks) are around £500, top mounts probably £100 for the pair. Drop links aren't a huge amount.

If the struts are rebuildable inserts (standard on Rev 1s), I don't know how the cost compares, but I can't see it being that much less.

It's not a hard job but it's probably a good solid days labour.

Of that quote how much of it is parts and how much is labour?

Prices seem reasonable.

You wanna make sure they do the tracking and wheel geometery check afterwards.

Once you add up the price of the coil overs, the top mounts, the other bits he needs AND fitting he'll be spending double, if not more than what he is.

I would buy the coilovers and fit them myself though ;)

cheers for the advise all. im sure i can do it myself, only thing is going by my sort of luck in the past, i'll prob come across something that wont come off and be bu88ered as i 'll have to put it all back together again and get the garage to do it. on the fence really as to whether to give it a go.

of the £700, £225 is labour. The guy did say if i want to source the parts he'll fit them for the same labour charge......

I think that's quite a good price from Toyota

I assume it's an NA though, and rebuildable struts are just getting new inserts?

If it's getting turbo billies, then it's a very good price, for as Jont has pointed out these would cost over £500 alone. Drop links are £60 a pair, and top mounts what, about £80ish?

To do yourself, it's always a case of having the right tool (insert gag of choice).

If replacing drop links, then simply angle grind or hacksaw them off, as I find the hex centre never stands up to the force after a decade or so.

You'll need a breaker bar and 19mm sockets to undo the hub to strut bolts - plenty of WD40/Plusgas on all the bolts first though.

Brake lines: either disconnect and bleed the system after, or hacksaw the strut bracket open.

Spring compressors are a must of course.

To get the top mount off, a good vice is really useful, or a second person to stop it spinning round (front only).

If rebuildable struts, you'll have trouble getting the big nut off that holds the shock in (I used a combination of stilsen wrench, blow torch, and then chisel + lump hammer).

Assembly is, as they say, the reverse of removal. Grease up the hub bracket when putting the strut back in, and have a large screw driver in one hole to help you line up the other hole. It is not a 2 person job, but it would help.

With the car up a decent height on axle stands I'd say about 2 hours a corner first time round.

Hi Ian

thanks for the info, that does help alot....

the price i go quoted wasnt by a toyota main dealer, but a private garage that purely specialise in toyota's - uk and imports. not sure if the price was for inserts or complete replacement (think they were prob the KYB inserts but not 100%)

this is for a tubby...

i am going to go to a motor factors near me tomorrow and see if they can get me quote on aftermarket set-up for a reasonable price as they saved me abount £70 of some piper cams for one of my old cars....

all comments greatly appreciated.....

cheers to all :| :) :D
