[Mk2] [Turbo] Have I Got A Non-Standard Gearbox or Gear Set???

Post by mattcambs »

I know that my newly aquired Rev 3 Turbo has an uprated and pretty aggresive LSD, but also the gear ratios seem a bit strange too.

1st to 4th seem to be very 'close' with 5th being a much, much taller ratio than 4th (revs drop about 1500rpm).

At 40mph in 4th gear the revs are at ~3000rpm compared to my friend Chris's (Chr15py on here) rev 3 which he reports as revving at ~2500rpm.

Both of our cars sit at around 3100-3200rpm at 70mph in 5th which seems right.

It seems then that my final drive ratio hasn't been affected by the uprated LSD, so does that mean that I have a different set of individual gears? The current setup does feel like I'm missing 5th and going straight to 6th!!!

Hope you guys can help :)

There was a post a little while ago with the standard ratios and speeds and other combinations of boxes.

<edit> Have a look at this thread:
http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... light=gear

From memory my rev 3 does ~60mph in 2nd at the red line, ~95mph in 3rd, ~130mph in 4th, and about the same as yours in 5th.

Thinking about the drive to work, 40mph in 4th is about 2500rpm so that would be similar to Chris.

Thanks Jon. Been looking for that thread!

Looking at this chart
Image

It looks like I might have either a Solara gear set with stock final drive, or a Solara gear set with Phoenix Power final drive. The Solara gear set has the biggest difference between 4th and 5th speeds with 5th having the same ratio as stock.

If I can confirm at some point what my car actually has (booked in with Rogue for a check over next week) then the gears might be up for sale in the future as I'd actually prefer a stock gearbox.

just checked mine on the way back from work

4th @ 40mph 2250rpm
5th @ 70mph 3000rpm (maybe a needle width over 3k)

this is with 245/40/17's on the back - speedo is GPS accurate up to at least 80mph - not checked any faster :-s

Not butting in at all, mate :) . If anything it means you have a LONG ratio box! Out of interest, what are the engine revs at 70mph in 5th?

5th @ 70mph 3000rpm (maybe a needle width over 3k)

Your 5th sounds about the same as mine (and Chr15py's), although Chris said his rev3 was at 4500rpm in 4th at 40mph

???????????????

All very interesting
