[Mk2] [Turbo] Whats a safe boost level?

Post by **toyota-mr2** »

Hi

I just wondered what people on here boost to?

My car is a rev 3 turbo with a stage 2 hybrid turbo. What could I boost to without causing damage?

Thanks :D

Hi Mate

Like i said when you purchased it mate without uprated intercooler as at it is a bigger turbo i wouldnt go above 1bar...14.5psi personally.

But see what other ppl say. i tend to be on the safe side but hey thats just me :thumleft:

That's a kinda impossible question, as anything above standard boost (13psi on a Rev3) raises the risks and stresses the engine and other components more.

If you've got a good quality Boost gauge, what are you boosting too currently with the Hybrid ?

How long is a piece of string? (twice the length of half its length?) anyway I would not say what boost figure is good for your car.

Ive known cars to pop at stock boost or below, Id get to know your car first , sort out the niggly bits that crop up, book some time on a Rolling Road and have them stick a wideband probe up the tail pipe and then start increasing boost a PSI at a time and make sure the AFR ratio is Richer rather than lean throughout the rev range and get them to look at the timing to see if it starts to pull it as revs and boost increase (det pinking)

Just whacking the boost to 15psi on a unknown car could land you in a popped gasket or holed piston.

It seems like nobody really wants to commit to a figure regarding boost levels.

I have recently increased the boost on my rev 2 turbo to 15 PSI. I have a Berk intercooler, which I guess helps from a safety perspective, but I am running the old CT 26 turbo which I understand doesn't like too much boost.

I have searched the boards looking for reassurance in running 15 psi, yet I can't really find what I am looking for. I have heard and known some folks to run 18 psi on a rev 2 without any problems, yet others would state that this is asking for trouble.

From my own perspective, I worry everytime I put my foot to the floor and watch that needle spin quickly round to 15 psi. I think "Detonation 8-[ 8-[ 8-[ " However, as yet nothing has gone wrong!

With regard to your own set up, who knows what is safe boost. It would seem that most people with exhaust, filter, de-cat and intercooler are running about 15 psi.

As far as detonation, melted pistons, head gasket failure etc.....I havent seen too many posts from people who have had these troubles from increased boost, so I guess you have to consider that evidence too.

Maybe rolling road set up or remapping is the best way to go, but then you are talking ££££ to set up properly. I suppose if you work out what a new engine costs, then that money is well spent!

Good luck! :thumleft:

15psi is the max on a CT26, but still safe. I'd get colder grade plugs if you haven't already got them.

I've got the same set up but with a CT20 and run 1.15bar.
