tyre choice - decisions, decisions...

Post by Mista Weava »

ok - am replacing two tyres on the G/F's k-reg 2.0 gt t-bar.

its got standards rims and is currently running 225-50-15 A022 Yokohama's.

the back ones are worn out ( ) and i am torn between putting the same rubber on to have a matching set all round still,

or,

putting goodyear eagle F1's on the back only. the wet grip of these tyres is second to none, but with the Yoks up front, i am wondering if this will adversley effect the handling in anyway?

can only afford the two you see, otherwise i would not be starting this thread and sticking F1's on all round! ;)

or - what other options would you recomend?

cheers,
Weava

i've got f1's up front and the yoko's a022 on the rear. When it comes to change them I'll put new F1's on the back and either F1's on the front or the bridgestones S02 if I can track some down. Again std 15" wheels.

The f1's grip like nothing else in the rain so if the front goes on the yoko's she will be fine

I found the Yoko A022 terrible as a rear tyre in the wet. The handling was pretty scary! Also the Yoko is the original spec tyre, and that was back in the early 90's! So early 90's tyre technology perhaps?
In contrast I find the F1's excellent in the wet, and they always come out tops for wet weather handling in tests by Auto Express, but they arent so grippy in the dry, where the Bridgestone SO3 has the edge.

i have had nothing but F1's on my scooby and i do agree - the wet grip is other-worldly.

F1's it is then!

thanks Lads.

yeah the a022's aint so hot in the wet but I found them far better than the toyo proxies i had previously. Now they were scary

S03's didn't like them either

And still Toyotas choice in 1999.
But yeah, they're crap in the wet. Which is a shame because they are superb in the dry.

I have front F1s and rear Pirelli P9000, grips like a dream in the wet, although the back end can step out if over gassed.

you'll likely just get more understeer, but that doesn't really matter that much for road driving

i went for F1's all round great in the wet & dry, but i think it was Lauren that said they'd overheat on the track ;)

Yep they do. Great tyres for the road. But if you are doing trackwork too i'd go for SO3s.

The only thing I'd add - S-03s have more grip on the road in the wet than F1s - but F1s give more feedback on the limit.

Driving the IMOC trackday at Donnington a couple of years back with S02s on the MR2 in the wet wasn't that easy - the S03s didn't normally give much feedback, and in the wet there was even less so break away was difficult to judge.

so SO3s are better then SO2s and SO3s perform better than F1s in wet and dry but give less feedback?

No, no and no.

HTH

PS. SO2s are hard to get in the correct sizes these days.
SO3s are better than F1s in the dry.

vice versa in the wet.

F1s can't take track work, they overheat too easily. If its for the road, go with F1s i'd say.

Overheat? So that may be why I needed new rear F1's last year after Tiff hammered my car around Bruntingthorpe :x
Suppose at least my engine survived :P

I've seen f1s delaminate after track work before. I've melted a set in 4 laps at Spa.
