[All] [Generic] Spraying help

Hello!

Booked a couple of days off work to get all the bodywork sorted on my car. I trust myself with it but I'm a novice so would need all the advice I can get!

Paint & primer - Where's the best place to buy standard Super Red from? I will be spraying both aluminium and fibreglass so what kind of primer should I be looking at?

The main part of the spraying will be the bottom lip of my front bumper. When it was resprayed it wasnt primered properly so paint is flaking off whenever the lip flexes. Which kind of primer will I need for this?

If your spraying with a compressor, Just nip down to your local paint supply shop and have a word with them, They will give you everything needed to get the job done properly.

If your on about doing it from aerosol, well i hate to admit it but i've always found halfords paints alright for small touch up jobs, Sometimes though its better to go to your local paint shop again and get them to mix your colour up in an aersol. They tend to spray a little better

yeh dispite there bad rep halfords is ok for your paint m8 only thing is watch its not to cold when youre spraying as it will cause your paint to bloom

best to spray in a heated garage or wait till the weather is a bit warmer

if your spraying over alloy you will need eching primer it wont stick if you just rough it up and spray over it plastic primer for plastic one coat should do then normal primer couple of coats of that i have got two air extractors in my workshop it will help to keep an constent air flow to help to stop over spray top coat celly paint easiest but srinks over time and tats if you get it as now they have band it or a base coat and celly laquer thats if you ar going to use an air compresor depends how much spraying your going to do i recomend get it in to a spray shop i been doing my xr3i for 10 months now on and off and its been a pain due to it being a met mercury grey and cant get hold of celly this colour any more so am using base coat a celly laquer its been a right pain still not happy with it

I sprayed all my parts including mirrors, handles and lower valence and grill with halfords super red 2. Got a surprizingly good finnish. Used their plastic primer on bare parts before several coats of red. Been 6 months and not one chip.

So are you using the water based paints?
What are they like , much harder to spray?

no am using acrilics base coat with celly laquer water based needs to be used in warm temps cant get my workshop that warm in these temps to get what i want for water based and need different spray gear idealy, takes to long in this temp to dry out in this temp between coats,but it wiil not before long untill untill they will be banning 2 pack in uk must say that mk1 mr2 looks the dogs balls if all that was used was halfords spray can paints find there hard work to use due to there spray pateren

Yep I only used cans of super red 2 from halfords. Its all in the prep work.

Flat colours are so much easier.

tell me about it wish i sprayed it black or red but because am stubborn i bought it that colour and other reasons, its been a right b1tch to spray good to see yours as turned out great did you use halfords laquer on your? found after using it during summer it cracked and bubbled up on the hottest day last year dont worry think i over applied it at the time

No laquer. Just the base colour. One tip though. I had to redo it first time. If you spray do it all in one day. If you re apply another coat the next day it reacts and cracks like mad. I had to remove it with Celuose thinners and do it again. Else leave it a few week to harden properly. I was amazed with the result I got. It was flakey and naff when I got it. I thought it would look a little better with a diy job. It turned out nearly pro. It been on 8 months now with not a single chip.

yep you right there wont be doing that again thats why asked about halfords paint did it in two days on my first mr2 only reason i but saying that the first time i had to use it it worked out ok that was during winter ,but scuffed it on the front bumper again and had to do it again in summer wish i left the scuff then again wish ididnt part ex it for a mondeo they are so wa#k, i got in to my mr2s thanks to test driving a mk1 one like yours ,think about geting one think they seem to be more in them then the na mk2s seem to be better handling or some thing if you know what i mean ? but def would not swop my turbo for any thing if you have not had a go in one do it trust me
