£50 to whoever fixes this problem!!!

Post by afennell »

Driving down some back roads tonight the rev counter stopped working, then when I slowed down the car was hesitant.
I had to keep the revs high until i got home as the engine felt like it was missing. Then she cut out when I stopped on the drive.
I would think the problems are linked as they happened at the same time. She is a Rev3 turbo with a uni chip.

Overfuelling wouldn't explain the rev counter dying though.....

The only thing that I can think of off of the top of my head is the alternator.

If that starts failing, it does have some very strange affects on the car indeed!!

For a simple 2 minute check, it's got to be worth doing? Put a multi-meter across the battery, bring the revs up to fast idle (1400 rpm should do it) and you should be seeing approx 14.4 volts.

As I said, worth a try :)

I will give that a try this weekend thanks.
I did start her up this morning and the rev counter was working this morning, and the car did not cut out but was a little lumpy.

Okay just taken her for a drive and seems to be running fine. Was idling a little high to start with.

Could this be the start of a faulty o2 sensor?

okay it has been over a week but the car has done it again. Rev counter died then the car started to cough and miss.
Started her up a few hours later and all okay.
This is the second time, both times I was driving very hard. She has been fine for over a week driving normally with the od burst.

Some body most have an idea, please.

She had a full service a few week ago.
Going to check the above out today, just strange the rev counter dies at the same time.

i wouldnt rule out a fault with the amp either, but it could just as likely be a distributor fault or ecu problem,or even just a wiring fault....in reality you need it to be permenantly faulty before you will find the problem, intermittant faults can be a nightmare to trace.

Will it have an error code if a uni chip is fitted?

Is the amp the item on the left of the engine bay at the top just right of the fuse box, as you stand at the back of the car

I would almost guarentee that the problem is an intermant fault on the charging side of the car. The rev counter will stop ( and the clock will also start to dim) if there is such a fault. This is followed by misfire at low revs - and eventually no spark at all!

Normal cause for it is a bad connection between the alternator and the the three pin plug.

You may also have notice that all the warning lights may flicker on and off on occasion...

Reach down into the engine bay and check the condition of the plug on the back of the alternator...

Did you have to change your alternator, the car seems to be charging fine, running at 14 v

Nope - just unplug it - clean out the socket - clean the plug and all should be well.

What you should do then is get some of the non setting rubber that Toyota is so fond of and work in it around the plug. This does two things - it stops the plug working loose - and it stops water ingres.

Only thing I cant find a source for the stuff!

jacked the car up today unplugged the wire in the alternator, cleaned and re-connected.
Took the car for a drive, started her again and the rev counter was dead and she was spluttering. Gave her a few revs and seemed to clear, drove home slowly with no problems.

Still has this problem. Going to try and clean the connector again this weekend.

Drove the car to see a few friends last night, the rev gauge stopped but the car did not miss, just felt very unresponsive.

Is it worth re-building the engine with forged pisons
